Title: My Savage will only idle with the choke out
Post by JSan2020 on 03/22/09 at 07:57:18

Hey guys, I am a new member, but I have been poking around here for awhile. I Purchased a 1999 with the intent to learn how to ride and maybe learn a bit of servicing. I think that the previous owner might have had the bike sitting around outside for a long time. There is a lot of rust in the nooks and crannies.

Anyway, the petcock was leaking a little bit, and thanks to this forum I found out about the raptor petcock, bought it and installed it. The old one had the filter broken in 5 places and had rust inside. I can now start the bike, every time with the choke all the way out. I left it running last night for 20 minutes, but I was not able to dial back the choke, or give it gas without it shutting off. Any ideas about what to check?

vacume lines or dirty gas... had both problems not to long ago... did the same with me!

Thanks for the reply, what did you have to do with the vacuum lines? I have the feeling that I missed a part of the petcock installation.

Most problems are caused by a dirty carb, a good cleaning should sort it out.

But because it's running you may try seafoam, about an ounce in the tank should do.

If you got the raptor petcock, you should plug your vac port in the carb.

that should fix it! I think I got some stuff stuck in my carb when I switched tanks and it would cut out on me when I tried to throttle her... just let her run  for about 20 and kept trying to goose it until it started runnin right!  Thanks Vers... I always forget "When in doubt.. USE SEAFOAM!"

Awesome, thanks for all the info guys, I am heading out to try and find some Seafoam. How do you plug the vacuum port? Is there a rubber cap that you can buy?

If you left the hose on the carb, and don't worry too much about looks, stick a golf tee in the hose. Alternately, plug the vacuum port with RTV.

A good sized screw will work too!

That's what I used when I went to my Harley manual petcock.

If it won't run on low rpm's with out choke after warming up that long then your pilot jet or pilot jet circuit is plugged.  It needs a good carb cleaning.

When you say carb cleaning, you do need new gaskets, etc...?

Is ther a topic here that goes into more depth on cleaning... step by step, or does the Clymers or Savage pitorial CD cover this as well?

Thanks

Wolf

I am not sure but I think there is a thread in the tech section on how to do a full carb tear down.  I have cleaned a lot of carbs so I fully believe in fully stripping them down and doing a thorugh cleaning.  It involves removing all screwed in jets, valve seats, accelerator pumps, diaphrams, anything rubber, and at minimum shooting carb cleaner spray (local auto parts store) through each opening and oriffice.  Then chase that with compressed air.  Same goes for all the jets you removed.  work very organized and methodically.  Lay things out on a clean paper towel when they are clean.  Then reassemble.

Its a can of carb cleaner you can get at wal mart and auto stores.

you may not have seafoam on cyprus. Its a product that stabilizes gas, cleans out carbs/fuel injectors, when a small amount is added to the oil (which i personally wouldnt chance on a wet clutch bike) its supoosed to clean out the engine itself etc etc. Its supposed to do all sorts of fun stuff. Basically an all in one fuel additive.
