Title: nitrogen Post by oksavage on 03/21/09 at 19:06:02 ok, so I was in Utah and I needed some new riding glasses and I went to the Harley stealership. All the new 09 models were on the floor and many of them had signs that said their tires were inflated with nitrogen. The gist was that this was better because it doesn't expand or contract as much as regular air. Any thoughts? Is this why they cost so much ;D BTW I did get some good glasses for $20, so not everything was horribly overpriced. |

Except that if you need to air up or down, you're probably not going to be filling with nitrogen. (In the case of something like autoX, offroading, etc). We were looking at some 09's today too... My girlfriend likes the pinkish colored one. :) |

Title: Re: nitrogen Post by Max_Morley on 03/21/09 at 19:41:05 The theory is that nitrogen molecules are larger and will leak out at a slower rate. Probably a response the SUV/Van underinflated tire rollover concerns. Most new cars have a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) on them that notify the operator if a tire is under a specified % low. Usually uses the ABS weel speed sensor but other methods are used. As good old air is about 78% nitrogen anyway, the case for the special air isn't very strong. I think Costco uses it, but then they have a way to get you back for a tire preesure check and tire rotation. I do believe in tire rotation espically on AWD FT 4x4 vehicles. Same tire brand, size and rotational speed are critical to the long life of the interaxle differentials. Max |

The guy at the dealership said they were spending a lot in time & labor, moving cars in & out, messing with tires. Now, they stay "Right There". It has a monitoring system( Anyone looked into how that works? One tire must rotate faster or slower because of the different radius? Does it count the pulses on the anti lock brakes & compare them?) & so far, it hasnt needed any air. We CAN drive back over there & get it aired up,, but I doubt Id do that, since I have a compressor at home. Hey,, How do they air it up with nitrogen, do they suck them down after seating the bead? I know the change interval on the Regular Air isnt near as long as the Nitrogen..I dont want to have to change the nitrogen early, just because its mixed with low quality AIR! Dang ITTT.. |

They actually use it in sealed boxes to keep things dry. They're called "Nitorgen Dry Boxes". And.... Nitrogen really, really, really likes to dry out rubber. Any of our epuipment that used N2 had the rubber o-rings go bad and replaced so often that it became part of the preiodic maintainecne schedule. So.... what happens to the rubber of the inner tube????? IT DRIES OUT.... Think about riding the twistys and a inner tube that possibly could be going.... Why doesn't it affect car tires??? It does, but the tire is so thick that it wears out first. The MC inner tube isn't as thick!!!! |

But he's a better car builder. But not enough money for the engines to be a big winner. Race car engines cost some serious bucks! |
