Ok, this is the first bike ive ever had to deal with. It did not start easy but i got it running but it was wierd. The bike does not like getting going from first gear to moving. when i let off the clutch it just shuts off the engine. Once moving it drove around fine but it does not like running in the first place and doesnt like getting going. It may just be that im doing something wrong but im not sure. Thanks ahead of time for any help you guys can give

well this post is a little vague, what do you mean by "getting going"? and when it dies when you let the clutch out, how does it react? does it sputter and die or does it just abruptly shut off? does the bike jerk and die?

also you said you got the bike running, what was wrong with it, hard start? no start? you said it started weird.....explain?

Yep, need a little more.

Did you change the sparkplug?
Does it have fresh gas & oil?

does it run ok at idle?
can you rev it up ok?
do you rev it up alittle before you let out the clutch?

kk, sorry. It does alot of cranking before it gets running and sometimes i cant get it running at all. When it was dying after letting off the clutch it lurches and dies immediately. when i actually got it moving around it was when i had to get on the throttle quite a bit while getting off the clutch. I have brand new gas in it along with oil.

You are using the enricher, usually called the choke? Proper technique is to pull the enricher out all the way, don't touch the throttle, and crank. Should start right up. When it does, start easing the enricher back in.

even with the choke all the way out it still does not start up right away

Is the air filter reasonably clean? Hows the spark plug look? How old is the gas? First gear, thats down from neutral, right? (sorry, I know you know, but it should be cleared)

yeah, i was in first gear down from neutral. The gas, air filter, oil, and spark plug are brand new. I just did everything i knew to get it running after sitting for five years. I have also taken out and cleaned the carburetor.

does it roll freely?
how about the exhaust? some have said look for creatures crawling in and dieing.

dead rodents! gotta hate that...

try dumping the old oil and refilling with 10w40 (no oil filter change) and starting it with the choke out. see if it fires right away

After the bike has been sitting for a while, have you tried first moving petcock lever to PRI to fill up carb bowl. After 5 seconds move petcock to FUEL. Finally with the choke pulled all the way out, (and not giving any throttle) cross fingers and attempt to start?

I'm thinking the clutch plates may be all stuck together.
Or your brake pads or shoes are stuck.
with engine off, in gear and clutch disengaged, can you push it around?

I have tried priming it before starting it and it still does not get going. I am able to roll it in and out of the garage and it did drive around even though not too well when i was able to actually getting it running.

Have you checked the plug after these attempted starts?
Is it black or white?
I think you'll find it's white.
But a good carb clean can't hurt either way.
That's what I'd do.
Go in the tech section, find Island_wahine's carb clean and go at it throughly.
And check your float level.
