Title: big piston
Post by aliassmith on 03/19/09 at 15:57:33

Has anyone tried to install a piston from a DR650 into a Savage engine?
does anyone know a source of oversize piston for the Savage?

Only suggestions Ive read about here is Wiesco. They supposedly make an oversized piston for the savage IIRC

If all you need is an overbore to clean up a scored or worn cylinder then your suzuki dealer should be able to help you out with one or two steps over piston.  If you are looking for a "big bore" kit...then you are out of luck...at least no one on this forum has found a standard kit.  We have discussed a custom build of pistons but could never come to terms

Wiseco used to list a big bore kit for the Savage, but now they don't.

The DR650 and LS650 shared common pistons & pins  in the early 90's through '95.
I had wanted to use a 100mm DR piston in the Savage but there is not enough metal in the cylinder.
The old Weisco kits had 95mm, 96mm & 97mm pistons so we know those sizes will work.  I believe a 98mm would also work if it is available.

I have sent an inquiry to Wiseco but not yet recieved an answer.

Searching through Wiseco's site this is what I found. They have the LS650 listed as off road. To me that ain't exactly letting me know that they know what they are talking about.

I have also considered the possibility of using the Savage crank in a DR650 engine.
The newer DRs have an 82mm stroke an a 100mm bore.
If a 94mm stroke crank from a Savage could be fitted into a DR engine, it would give 738cc of displacement. It might require a custom built con rod to get the proper length, but that would cost less than replacing a cylinder liner with a 100mm one and flycutting the cases to match in a savage.
I have heard rumors of a Suzuki single 800cc bike that was built for the european market. Does anyone have any knowledge of that?

OMYGOD! I found it and instantly fell in lust!
It is called the DR 800 Big and was sold in europe from about 1988 to about 1998. A Dr with large fuel tank and a 779cc engine.
105mm piston and 92mm stroke!
Now How can I get my paws on one of those?
