Title: My Bobber/Chopper (now w/pics)
Post by Wolf on 03/19/09 at 04:42:58

Bobber  :-/ Chopper.... what shall it be!

For now... being my 3rd post and first bike in awhile...  and the engine just knocking along... bummer.  I haven't rebuilt an engine since Middle School, and that being a KD90  lol!  It became a KD100 plus...

here goes:

1999 LS 650 (Stock)
appx 16000 miles... too tired to go out an look, but about right,
NEW tires...  they be cheap and wobble and drift   hehe
Seat -  a replacement needed or a recover... *my ass is still sore from a recent 6 hr round trip to Orlando... not even 30 minutes into the trip mind y'all !

Project Upgrades:
- Raask 60mm (on the way)
- Alliance membership
- SEAT (Solo - 1 piece 2 up or 2 piece 2 up)
*** here the bobber vrs chopper...  or cheap route (thus sore ass)     a new/custom/homemade cover.
- Carb package from Lancer
- cone filter from this site
-  is the performance cam still available?

oh!  Shall I get new tires and a paint job when done to boot...

I planned for the upgrades when I purchased this bike, wasn't sure I be doing pistons, honing, bearings, lifters and chains... etc if needed.
I changed the oil... 10-40W but have read here that I should probably use 20-50W (live in Florida).  Going to change again to clean the insides and tighten the muffler collar (?).  Hopefully this cures my ails, before the price and labor go up.... hehe

Throw in the cats and dogs too!

I purchased and MC lift and orderes the Clymers 86-04 edition.
(getting an impact wrench too)

ok... I am ready.... I read (or plan to finish reading all posts here shortly)  :-?

Anything else I need

                    .... like a labotomy

wuf  (soon to be Wolf) - when the Savage runs ... again, hopefully soon.

The seat is the modified/reskinned effort (since remodified to the rear to eliminate the staple from protruding thru the vinyl cover).

I forwarded your list to Santa.

That's some cool stuff you got planned.  Keep us updated, take pics and post the progress.

Thanks Diamond Jim!   hehe

Yeah, a nice list ... to start....  I'll definately be taking pics...

... A a definate Thank You to all for the past (forum) and future support!   :)

Wolf

Short story.  I purchased a HD Fat Boy thru the military... Got a call from HD that it arrived... was handed  :-X papers... needless to say, I passed and someone else is riding the Fatboy lol!

So...  this has been planned for 10 years! Wasn't sure it be the Savage, but HAPPY with the purchase after riding it - however brief it has been to date

Well most people here go the bobber route.... the Savage is a great bike to bob! I went the chopper route due to the fact Im a huge fan of old school choppers! Either way you have your hands full! in regards to your list you can find all the information you need here! just about every mod that can be done to your bike has been done and posted here! The tech section is great for some easy know how! Keep us updated!

Thanks Chopped!

I am still reading the vast bank of data available... nice that the bike has essentially not changed much since it's inception... hopefully many more.

Nice bike and thanks for the pics and info....   Are those forward controls the ones from ??? on this site?

I made the forward controls myself with a slight mod to keep the kickstand in stock position. Ed L's controls moves the stand forward as well.

Wobble? Sounds like wheel bearings. I replaced my wheel bearings when I replaced my tires at 9000 miles. Huge difference. Tightened it right up.

So when it comes to seats.... aftermarket seems the basic route.... now are there certain seats NOT to get?

I prefer a solo (gel?), but a one piece gel is also an option... it just means which way i'll swing with the bike

I am handy with tools, can do limited fabrication... enough to handle what I have seen here...  Looking for comfort, but then we get to the suspension... lol

The pinging has subsided somewhat, just sounds 'sloppy" when accelerating.  Still there thou, the sound comes from the top end..... maybe its me.  I'll still open her up just to make sure.

The Raask 60mm ...  shipped ! :)

Don't know if i want to upgrade/rebuild the existing carb or just simplify and go after the Carb setup here.  $$$ (while not foolish) is not an issue when it comes to the engine.  I'll probably be getting the cam too, thus might as well rebuild the engine and recondition or upgrade where needed.

I really like the clean look of the Savage when you remove the airbox and battery.   Now where does the battery go???  I haven't gotten there yet...

Basically, this bike might be getting a recondition down to the frame.  Might need to buy another so I can ride. ::)

Wolf

Thanks Yonuh Adisi and Rouge_Cheddar for the info!

Latest update:

I have ordered the verslavy from verslagen1 and I have ordered the performance cam, cam chain and jetset kit from Lancer.  I'll also  have an spare engine soon ('96).

I guess a basic tool kit is next, mine is SO SHOT!  Missing this, missing those, all over the house, so a new dedicated one is needed...

Ok... I am outta here (for now)... off to ride the sunset in Florida!

Be careful after you install that performance cam from Lancer. It has been known to lift the front of the bike when you throttle hard with it. (I know it does it to mine) You may end up with permanent grin syndrome  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

That is beautiful Demin!

The Raask 60mm dragpipe arrived yesterday!  Need to thank Sivert Raask!

The CD and Clymers arrived earlier this week also.

Awaiting the other upgrades to arrive

So, instead of this  :-?  ...  I'll be smiling when I can twist that throttle, lift a wee wheelie and be like Yonuh!

hehe   You funny DJ!   ::)

I just received my Raask 60mm dragpipes (sweetness) and awaiting my Jetset package and K&N filter.  As soon as I decide what seat... AND almost had a Harley Brand new seat for free (he just can't fathom it on a Suzuki)... Oh well, I'll get it yet  ;)

I probably won't strip it bare yet, but get the excess items off to make room for the new or upgraded ones.  The cam package should arrive end of this month to sometime early June...

So this could be a bobber in stages....

Wolf  :D (can you guess the real teeth in there!   lol)

I'll post a pic of the before '99 Ls650 and add pics of the build I do them.

Title: Re: My Bobber/Chopper soon to be
Post by Wolf on 04/09/09 at 15:10:24

Back from lala land... the Raask dragpipe sounds wonderful!  man, the engine seems free'r and the knocking is gone.  It seems the muffler bolts were real loose... but I can really hear the sloppy cam swooshing away.  But the muffler sound...   Great!, even the massive backfiring...  I guess I'll be doing jets real soon... I think I also noticed the carb is already pre-drilled for access to the "screw."

ok... now i'll confirm the shift pattern and begin the airbox removal.

also, I need to get a breather filter now???  I'll try and read up on other threads on this subject...

As soon as I figure the picture attachment, I'll post pics from the beginning.

Wolf :)

The Raask drag pipe- where in the pipe is the baffle?

Title: Re: My Bobber/Chopper soon to be
Post by Wolf on 04/10/09 at 05:03:20

Hi Diamond Jim...  It has inside a honey combed baffle along the back pipe held in by a bolt..  It no longer is a solid one piece.  They have made it a 2 piece as they have 3 additional muffler options ($40 more and a little quieter)  It is still sweet.  the engine just seems free (aside from the backfiring.  The clutch seems different as low end power is increased.  Very nice thumps.  Definately need to throttle down when near the neighbors (but they have M/Cs too).

Going to take apart the airbox later today.

Post by Wolf on 04/13/09 at 18:34:42

Man... I was basically bobber today!  lol      Removed the air box, seats, tank, carb, battery box, belt guard, that goose neck thingy....  basically down to not much save the engine wheels and frame...

Finally got the K&N installed...   ::)

Don't ask... ok... I finally re-removed the battery box and then installed the filter to the carb.... then squeezed the battery box in.   That Sh*t box was moved to the rails beneath the front seat held by zip ties.  Got it all together save the front seat and belt guards, cranked it up... it starts... and turned off...late night... neighbors  ;)

Tomorrow I'll reattach the seat after I modify the back so the staples won't come thru the vinyl and reattach the guards... maybee.. I just have to take them off as soon as I start the cam area, transmission area and top end, save carb jets etc... projects...

at least I can ride until then!

Wolf  :)

Question:  I now have 2 black tubes coming out of the carb?  ! on each side... what do i do with these.  I know to get the filter for the crankcase breather tube and possibly a fuel filter.  Thanks

Title: Re: My Bobber/Chopper soon to be
Post by verslagen1 on 04/13/09 at 19:12:41

them black tubes are vents, stick them up into the frame.  If the bike tips over, better it leak into the frame instead of the ground or you.  And don't worry, when you tip it back up, it'll leak out the bottom of the frame.

Title: Re: My Bobber/Chopper soon to be
Post by Wolf on 04/13/09 at 21:04:49

Thank you ... thank you ... Thank you.... I got a little nervous as I remembered the one on the left side... but the right threw me off...
Now tommorrow I'll open her up and see what the K&N and Raask do to the engine performance.  I guess now I need to get my gaskets on order for the upcoming engine party!

I can see I am going to get DJ's specs on the rear floor insert.  and the battery.... stuck there right in the middle...  that is definately goin to move rearward for the K&N and ease of carb maintenance/removal.  I'll get the engine right before I start the Bobbing!

f n lost vent hoses must be contageous, stay away from all the other noobs or they'll catch it too.

Of all the luck... it's raining today!

Fired her up in my porch needless to say... Nice rumble... and an occasional skip and backfire, but a lower sounding "blast" !  I installed the $10 crank breather and need to tie down the 2 carb vent hoses.  Other than that, I only have the belt guards off.    I do and will have some parts available (notably air box and right cover...)  More to come later.

Question:  The upper and lower belt guard removed, you need to add washers to the "sprocket" guard right?  (I didn't and this guard rubbed the sprocket...)   :o
I did additional zip ties

Wolf

I guess it is time for my jets (soon to arrive).  I'll give a road test and an update.

I'll add pics of the build / conversion as soon as I figure how to get from camera to pc to website... A few mo days...  :-?

Needlesssssss to say.... It sounds great!... but a dog.... sooooo lean....  starts out nice then boggs as soon as I accelerate... I apply choke an dthe engine revs freely but still bogs... anything I can do with existing jets ?

Definately going to move the battery box rearward by relocating the box mounts on the new floor  which will give the filter more room

Oh well, mods will await at least a couple weeks anyways...

Update:  I am in the process of frabricating brackets to move my airbox back.  Thanks diamond jim for the tip!  Obviously, this moves my wires to the forefront, but that is ok... I have a few weeks for all the big stuff to collect... so the air box and wires and pretty them up...

Any thoughts to just cutting the existing rear fender, or is it easier to just frabricate one from a trailer fender?  I plan to use the existing tire sizes, no need to get too wild .... yet   lol.

Oh well, pictures shortly... that is next on the project list.  I am taking pictures currently, just haven't applied my noggin yet...

::) Ok!  I am taking too-defined photos...

Wolf  ::)

I have to get with Lancer and find out the difference between the 36mm and 38mm carbs... I'll need another carb anyways for the incoming engine and gives me time to tinker while riding... 8-)

Ok  '96 engine inprocess of dismantling for parts, but looking good.  My '99 needs a transmission (4 speed here...), so I was thinking...

I only need a starter and top end, swap engine time?  Might be alot easier than doing a transmission swap and split the case... either way, I am considering the silicone treatment after I hone/true the cylinder.

Any thoughts...

Can I use the existing cylinder from the '96 and swap with my '99  straight up?  I can then bore the '99s cylinder and add a new oversized piston/rings  The '96 parts looks real good for both.  The whole transmission will also be swapped.  I'll see if I can diagnose the '99s why it only shifts 4 (vrs 5 speed).   :o   I finally got the cam chain off today and will measure it.  I will compare with the 99s cam chain and use the best one (if in spec).  When the new chain arrives, I'll upgrade then... pull the engine a second time... or can I swap Cam chain with the engine mounted?

I am getting into the '99 engine tomorrow and see the issues there ::)  ... and I am ordering gaskets!

I purchase tools and shop supplies on a daily basis... lol
Not many really:  Today... anti-sieze, 30mm & 32mm sockets,  hehe ... I do need the circlips wrench for the verslavy ...

I have ordered the OEM/Suzuki complete gasket set.  I have read in other posts, you can use just gasket sealer only.  IF... what gasket sealer(s) would you reccomend.

I also have ordered the stainless bolt/nut set (ebay).  Both should arrive later this week.

E-mailed Bore Tech concerning their bore/hone and carbon treatment of the cylinder head.  This process takes about 2 weeks engine downtime and appx $160.  This will make an oversize of the piston/ring specs... so a Ls660 will be in order.  The piston and rings I have to check on... but I guess another $150 or so...

So JD!!!!    can you say BOB IT!  Since the downtime requires 3 to 4 weeks of dissasembly, additional parts, rebuild and mo money   lol!

I plan to rebuild the existing carb with the jet set and gasket (also from Lancer).   With these other mods, ther could be a possible Lancer new carb on order... I mean, I changed just about everything else except the tires  ::)

Wolf  :-X

OH... hehe   what tires would you recommend... just in case I get  :-?

Thanks LANCER!

Just picked up the Mikuni 38 from Thunder Products that is on sale and the magnet for the oil filter (less than $100 for both shipped).  I just couldn't pass up the savings.  I know I'll need more parts to complete this mod (I may use my existing carb rejetted at first).  We may have a CARB PARTY @ LANCER's... so all in the SE USA....  8-)

Sorry LANCER, so make plans everybody!   ;)

Update:  I picked up the OEM full gasket set and the stainless bolt/nut kit w/allen head arrived.  The only thing left to modify before I rebuild is the Bore Tech procedure (bore/hone and silcone carbon treatment).

Soooooooo...  This Memorial weekend will be spent dismantling the bike/engine.  I am sure the wiring will get updated as some will be re-routed.   I'll be taking pictures of the whole process.  If there is anyone that wants a particular shot ... speak up and I'll include.  I'll be including every mod (I am doing most of 'em).  I will be on vacation visiting my daughter soon and hope to have the dismantle complete and the transmission switched before I leave.  I plan to ship my cylinder head off so when I return, it will be ready for install.  I plan the OEM O/S piston kit for this build, no need for more compressio (Wiesco sp piston)... or money  hehe ... and Bore Tech will p/u the kit and check tolerances.

So by the end of June, I should have the bike reassembled and gives me a week to tweek the carb before the 4th of July.  I wished I had Demin's knowledge and abilities (welding etc...).  Thats ok... just alot slower here (i race between the Clymers, the SavageCD and this site as I do anything.  I can take off the seat now without looking   ::)

My goal is the 4th!  Engine first, body later, I want to ride.  This is going to be a stealth Savage Beast when it is done... well, if it turns on  :-X

... did I say possible paint the frame... :-?

Wolf  :D

ps.  Hey!!!  I hear of a Savage near me that has a suicide shifter (the head mechanic at the local dealership told me).... anyone with a picture of one (no I am not doing this mod.. yet) hehe  I haven't seen it yet, but when I do, I hope to take a picture.

Demin's purple bobber has a sportster "peanut" style fuel tank on it.  I believe it requires fabbing new front and rear mounting locations.  Someone else that knows more about it may chime in.

Just need to weld a connector nut on the frame for the front mount. On the rear I cut the mount off of the rear of the stock tank, and welded it to the Sporty tank.

Woohoo!

My Thunder Products arrived today!  The Mikuni 38mm VM Roundslide carb, Dial a jet kit w/Snorkel kit, the UFO (ultimate flow optimizer) and Magna Guard (oil magnets).

I think I need a throttle cable to complete this particular mod... and Lancer's gift with carbs...   lol!

The only thing left is my cylinder head mod (Bore tech).  I'll be sending them a cleaned '96 cylinder head (ole Savage eddies).  I plan to use the '96 case and "5" speed transmission (it works).  I'll still rip mine apart to looksee for the future and use any parts ('99 starter, etc...) .  I may swap/rebuild the clutch if the '96 w 10K dosen't  work out.  That is easy to get to.

Oh!  ... and the nitride cam chain (hopefully) will be here within a month ... or so.  The '96s cam chain ... MAY... be ok, but would rather switch out now; I may just purchase a OE chain (unless someone has a nitrided cam chain they are not using).  Everything is paid except the Bore tech and o/s piston kit and shipping.  Total for this is $300 more  :-X

The next 2 weeks will be spent taking the engine apart and marking/storage/photo.  I'll send out the cylinder head then since the process takes 2 weeks appx and when I return from visiting my daughter, then the assembly.

I'll post a pic of the carb parts I received today (later).

Thanks Lancer!  My intent is to have this ready to ride on the 4th of July   ::)

Sorry about my thread revival week but trying to catch up on things.  Wolf, I remember you had some serious projects going on for your ride.  How has that come along in the past 6 months?
