I got my savage at the end of last years riding season. Put a few hundred on it. So far I've been really enjoying it. Can't wait for the snow to melt so I can get out again.

Now, my question. When riding at a stead speed, usually around 45 mph, I could feel the motorcycle "surge". The speed appeared constant, but I could feel a variation.

Is this due to the Savage being a single cylinder or is it something that the white spacer mod could reduce or something in my head?

White spacer mod, but check in this order, pilot adjustment, main, then white spacer. each one affects the other.

and check your vac line.... you could have a small air leak...

I'm new to motorcycle maintenance, could you be more specific what you mean by "check"?

The previous owner put different jets in (0.055 pilot and 0.155 main) and a HD Dyna exhaust on, if that makes a difference.

The vacuum line, runs from the back of the petcock (fuel tank shutoff) to the right side of the carb, (usually a chrome spring covered line)....
first check that there is no gas in that line, (should be absolutely none).... then inspect it for any cracks where air might leak out and clamp it securely at both ends... the ends are where cracks are most likely to appear.

Constant speed is not an easy thing to do. You are always moving the throttle a tiny, tiny bit.

When I was adjusting my bike, trying to get the correct jet combination, I did an experiment and put the white spacer back in(which causes a lean mid range). I noticed that there was something I would best describe as a "stumble" in the high 30's to mid 40's speed range (mph). I did not really see it on the speedo, but felt it for sure.

So I guess you are not crazy....... well ... on second thought ..... my wife & son call me crazy.... so maybe we both are.... :-?

Next time you're cruising at 35-45 mph, try pulling your choke out to first position. If the hesitate/surge stops, you're a little lean in the mid.
