Title: Brake Light wiring
Post by vhfkid on 03/10/09 at 11:04:41

Normally I'd do a lot more searching of past RSD articles, but I'm in a time constraint today. I looked over the tech section, but didn't notice anything

I'm adding an LED light for a second brake light, where is a good place in the wiring to splice into it, only for when the brake is applied, ie no running light.

Thanks
VHFKID

Connector under the pillion seat.
White with a black stripe is hot when brakes are applied.
Black with a white stripe is ground.  Or ground to the frame.

As always, check with a meter first to be sure.   ;)

Mine wasn't under the pillion, but what he said is right. There should be three wires together in there somewhere. White with black is what you want, and brownish wire and a black with white is ground.

One Correction:  Brown is not ground.  Brown is running lights and is hot when ever the switch is on or in park.

It doesn't say that brown is ground. I was saying that the White with black was the one he was looking for, a brownish wire (which would be running lights) and the Black with with white is the ground. Sorry for any confusion. Also if you check the White with black out with an ohm meter you'll only get anything if you pull a brake, even with no battery hooked up to the bike.

on my 06 there is a loop at that connector so there was plenty of slack
i followed the oem brake lite wires down thru the fender
sleeved the led conductors in vac line tubing from the under fender tray back and elect tape forward its too tight in the tray for the tubing..my leds conductors wer not jacketed but two seperate conductors ,theres a good oem tye  point between the tray and the back of the fender.

I read your post before and I'm doing the same thing, only Im going to use anderson power pole connectors for the connections.  It's going to be mounted on a cooler/bag on the back of a luggage rack I have yet to fabricate. I'm also going to add a 12V battery connection for charging cell phone etc..
