Title: Anyone get the Valve Timing Inspection Cover OFF??
Post by Mortation on 03/07/09 at 12:41:01

I can't get this thing to turn for the life of me and the biggest screwdriver I have is just screwing up the cover.  Is there a trick to this???

Vise grips and a used brake pad.

Too late.  I got it off and not in a good way.  Busted it.  Took a chunk out of the middle.  No damage to the engine case and it unscrewed after that.  But now I have to pull the cover off and change the gasket because I saw a couple small pieces of metal fall inside :(

They are plastic?  I was thinking so when my magnetic grabber wasnt pulling the little pieces out of the hole.  What a PITA.  Now I have to pull the crankcase cpver off to make sure the little plastic parts dont end up someplace in the engine.  ARGH!  At least all the parts were only $20.

I don't know about yours, but mine's aluminum.

I don't think mine was.  Maybe.  It broke awefully easy.  Snapped a hole right in the middle from spinning a screw driver.  And my little magnet didnt get the parts.  Oh well :(

Magnets don't work with aluminum anyway.

Argh, sorry i was slow to reply.  As it was I typed that on my cell phone waiting for the laundry to finish.  Atleast the side cover isn't damaged.  I dinged the threads on mine and only barely got it back on after careful cleaning and plenty of oil.  Someone on here said it is some odd pipe thread too.   :-/

I still wonder if there isn't an iron pipe plug that would work in there.  I suppose that would crack the case instead, huh?

I haven't tried the old brake pad trick.  I ground a one-inch spade bit to a slight curve that matched the groove on the plug and popped it right out.  I carry the bit right along with my other tools now.

I took a washer & sammiched it 'atween 2 others a bit smaller & ground the radius shorter in one area, to make it fit the groove. The threaded rod they are all mounted on is the handle. If I needed to pull it &  all I had handy was a brake pad, tho, Id use it. You can spring for a "Spayshull Tewll" but I hate doing that.

My tool box has those stupid pieces that slide down in front of the drawers to keep them from falling open when you move it. That fit PERFECTLY into the groove and then I used a pair of pliers to twist it.

Re: Cheap Timing Cover Removal Tool
Reply #1 - Today at 08:10:32       & if it gets outta the slot its gonna make a very large scratch...Id shorten the blade down to about an inch & grind the edge to a radius ti fit into the bottom of the slot.  But it looks like a Low Buck idea thatll do the job.

Mine's cheaper and I got a pile of them for free.
Well not really, they cost around $20 and take some 5 to 10k miles to make.
After that, they're perfectly good timing port cover removers.
Take a used (no, I don't throw anything away, unless of it's on fire or gonna blow up or somethin') front brake pad, jam the skinny end into the slot and twist it with a wrench.
However, judicious use of a hacksaw, and a file turns it into a great dual handled cover twister.   ;D
