Title: Baffle designs (TorqueMaster baffle thread)
Post by diamond jim on 03/06/09 at 15:05:36

That's what I'm calling it.  This is just a FYI post because I love learning about how things work and getting a better understanding of design pros and cons of which this baffle has both.

I made this today for my DIY 1.75" drag pipe exhaust.  It's mounted with the narrow end inserted first is mounted in the pipe about 3" behind the header.  This baffle noticeably increases low end torque up through about the middle of the RPM range but it chokes the engine in the upper half of the RPM range.  It sounds great at idle and low RPM but at high RPM is sounds closer to the stock muffler than any other baffle I've tried with this dag pipe.  It's deeper sounding of course because of the length of pipe after it but has a little of that sewing machine sound to it.  The restrictor pipe needs to have about a 20% larger inside diameter.  I don't think restrictor pipe length is as important as the diameter.

Still got more work to do...

This is looking at it from the big end.

where did you get that baffle, I'm not going to do drag pipes but something close, I'm going for more of an old school chopper kinda look might slash cut the end or even get it bent up, not real sure yet.  That and what size did you get your drag pipe made, what diameter i mean?

Nix, it fits my 1.75" OD pipe.  I made it from galvanized pipe and two fittings like this:

So you can retrieve it by running a pipe up in there & screwing it in?

Cool

They have been talking about popsicle baffles somewhere.

How about a spring loaded one that opens up and full throttle?

I've actually been working on that!  As for this baffle, I've removed the restrictor pipe, turned it around and put it back.  The internal tapered shape makes it act just like a cone.  I like it.  The way it runs and sounds seems to be about perfect.

I was at a hardware store when I got to wondering how a baffle designed like an auger bit would work?

I think there would be too much turbulence where the exhaust would first contact the baffle unless the pitch was just right.

That is what the spiral baffles are all about.  The one I use on the savage is a double spiral (minimal spiral around the outside wall, tighter spiral around the next inside wall) and then a 1.6" straight through section in the middle.
My discription is rather simplistic, but the idea behind the design is that the unit provides backpressure in the low range, but as engine speed & exhaust velocity increases, the air flow changes from mostly going through the spirals to mostly going through the straight area (straight area has perforations along the inside wall that breaks up sound)
The length, width, spiral design  and such is supposed to create a vacuum effect at the back end of the muffler in order to PULL exhaust gases out of the pipe when near wide open throttle.
Works really good and sounds really good.

Lancer I'm interested in more information on your baffle.
Sorry Jim not trying to steal your thread.

I'm with you SA.  Lancer, how do get/fab one of these?

I think there would be too much turbulence where the exhaust would first contact the baffle unless the pitch was just right.

You could probably just cut a strip of metal about the witdth of your pipe diameter, clamp one end in the vise, and twist it into a spiral, then insert into the pipe, for a similar effect, maybe? :-/  Dunno if that would cause too much restriction or not though.

I've seen similar wire spirals for car filler tubes. They're supposed to prevent kids syphoning petrol out of tanks. Cost only 4 € apiece though.
To be honest I don't think any of these spirals improve exhaust flow. It follows path of least resistance and if there's a gap, it flows through the gap and not through the baffle. They create more back pressure and may well improve power if the jetting is somewhat lean.

Guys, those are great ideas, finds and thoughts.  Thanks for the feedback.

On Saturday, my wife told me I needed to go to Mike's Merchandise in Guntersville, AL.  Man, this store is a dream come true.  That store rocked!  It had tons of stuff that I've never seen at any other store.  I picked up a bunch of stuff including what I'm now using as a baffle.  I have no idea want the steel tube that I used is for but it was shaped like this:

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh128/russ_diamond_jim/hollowbafflepipe.jpg

I then did these following steps to the pipe, including attaching it to the coupling I used in the first pics in this thread.

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh128/russ_diamond_jim/modbaffle-1.jpg

Lastly, I did the triangular pushed-in design that you see on some baffles.  Instead of several small ones, I did ten rather large ones.  The triangular tabs almost reach arcross to the other side of the inside of the pipe.

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh128/russ_diamond_jim/finishedbaffle-1.jpg

The end result is awesome.  The coupling acts sort of like a cone and adds what seems like the right amount of back pressure at all RPMs.  The long baffle takes up about 2/3rds of the pipe length, breaks up the sound pulses, and being only slightly narrower than the pipe helps keep the deep sound of the pipe.  It's just what I've been looking for.

Performancewise, my bike has a sweet spot at about 62mph.  This is the spot where I'm just cruising and the engine, bike and me simply feel in harmony.  You just feel it.  Nine times out of ten when I'd get in that zone and glance at the speedo it would be between 60-62.  With this pipe and baffle, I found myself in that sweet spot a few times yesterday.  When I glanced down, the speedo showed 70-72mph.   That's a new one for me with all the baffle attempts.

;D  Just messin' with ya!

BTW Justin, thanks for the oil leak tip.  That fixed it.  Awesome.
