As ya'll know, I have been using an 87 frame for mock-ups before modding the FireLizard, well, I am pretty much done with the mods that require mock-ups, I now want to build the 87. I want to turn it into a trike for the wife.

I have no idea what I am doing. Here's the gist of it. I have a naked 87 frame, and a rear end out from under a 76 MG Midget. My brain went into over drive when I realized this.

So, any suggestions? I want to use a Savage engine as the powerplant, but have no idea how I could tie it into the rear end. If it is impossible, let me know and I will think of something else, if not, any suggestions would be helpful.

Not sure what a mg rear end looks like, but most cars use a shaft drive to a differential.
Hurdle #1, are you going to turn the engine side ways and hook up a drive shaft to the savage tranny?
Mikes trikes advised using a quad rear end so that wouldn't be a problem, just convert to chain drive.
Hurdle #2 go find a wrecked quad. should be easier than hurdle #1.

The only reason I even thought of using the MG rear end was because I have it on hand. The rear end looks like any other cage rear end just smaller.

you could use the mid drive out of an xs 1100, the chain runs to the mid drive then a shaft out the back. i've seen it done twice for cb750 trikes.

Just looked on e-bay and found a mid drive. Definitely looks doable.

I think it should with the performance mods we have all come up with. It won't be a screamer but I think it would work well enough for an around town runabout.

A savage trike done right would be sick! I personaly would try to copy a 4wheeler setup. seems to be the easiest, cheapest, and lightest, but then again you never know.....DO IT man. It may be a chalange but Im sure would be worth it in the long run...

One possible drawback to using the setup from a four-wheeler is that most of them don't have differentials. You want a differential, or you will play hell turning.

Some years ago I saw a rig using one of the old, huge, stationary engines to power a truck (for show). He used a right-angle drive which he said came from a combine. You might ask at some sort of farm store and see if you can get one. There are lots of old combines no longer used because they are too small for todays mechanized farming. Not being a farmer, I don't know for sure, but I think those right angle drives were used in the detachable heads on the combines. Another possible source would be from a tractor-mounted mower, which uses a right-angle drive to run the blades from the tractor PTO shaft.
