Title: Removing passenger pegs on savage?
Post by Jonny_Chicago on 03/03/09 at 10:24:51

How have you guys removed your passenger pegs on your savage/s40? I have tried to saw, push, and pull those things off, but they are a b!tch.

Any input is much appreciated!

Thanks
Jonny

Johnny

I have not taken mine off, but I bought a set for a project.  They have a bolt through the back, from inside the bike, an allen head, I think they are outisde and I am inside.  Try looking behind them and see what you can see.

Mike

Johnny,

The easiest way to remove the pegs is to drop the rear wheel, then use an allen wrench to remove them.  You may be able to get the right side off without taking the wheel off, but you will have to drop the wheel to get the left one off.  Have fun. :)

Shoot, I was trying to avoid taking off the wheel.  Maybe when I have my rear brakes replaced, I could ask them to take them off for me.

Thanks thus far for the responses!

I will do the front brakes, but I'm not going to mess around with taking off the back wheel, the belt, and the brake.  I leave that to the professionals, just my opinion.  I don't want to be driving down the road and my wheel fall off.  I only do things I feel comfortable doing.

Seen to many friends think they where "mechanics" and end up screwing up things cause they have no idea what they are doing.  My bike is not a learning experience and it is the only one I got.

P.S. I wonder if I could saw those pegs off with a heavy duty saw of some sort.

If you're afraid to operate a wrench, the world wonders how you'll ever operate a saw.

I know how to go in reverse with a wrench.
How do you undo what you just did with a saw?

A screw up that could possibly lose a rear wheel? While its true I just cant wrap my head around Calculus & that fact does not invalidate Calculus, I just cant grasp how it would be possible to lose the rear wheel. The belt can stay on, All thats required is REmove the wingnut from the brake actuator rod, loosening the Big Nut all the way off, loosen the adjusters, pull the axle, Push forward on the wheel & let it fall enough to tilt enough to pull the brake shoe carrier out, wheel & tire can stay in there, because the spacers being out allow it to move enough. Keep an eye on them, IIRC, one is longer than the other.

I had never worked on a bike & I was scared of this thing, but after a few small projects, it stopped being scary. You seem so sure of yourself in so many ways. I am truly surprised to find out the bikes basic maintenance worries you. But, I do understand. Honestly, tho, Johnny, this is easy stuff here. Maybe if youll get a biook, look at it, then just go sit & look at the job & think about it a couple of days, read the book some more, tal;k about it here, make your plan & walk off into it. I know Ill do my best to help. Your bike, do what you can live with, buit you know you're young & if you step out now & get out of that comfort zone, by the time you are in your 30's you'll have a set of tools & be doing all your maintenace & havce saved 10 times what you spent on the tools AND have your bike, in your garage, instead of sitting in a mechanic shop on a pretty day.

Best of luck, whichever way you go, Dude!

You guys EMPOWER us Newbies. I want to run out and yank my rear wheel off just because now I feel like I can! Hey I did the seat mod, changed my own oil, installed spotlights and wired them to the hi-beam switch! I'm looking forward to meeting some of this group at the Dragon!

Jonny,

I know how you feel.  The first time I took my back wheel off and put it back on, I kept waiting for the bike to fall apart.  You know what...it didn't.  To my surprise everything held together.  Since then I have taken just about everything apart and put it back together.  It's really not that hard...just don't be in a hurry and make sure you put things back together tight.

But if you are afraid to do it yourself, by all means, have a "professional" do it... then wonder if HE was in a hurry and forgot to do something right.   ;)

don't cut the pegs off,... if you do, you'll end up with the remnants of the bolts trapped between the tire and the swingarm....
then you'll have to pull the wheel to get them out....

i used a cutting wheel to shave the peg locks down and used a shortened allen wrench to hold the bolt then spun the peg off, kinda a pain but i didnt want to take the wheel off either, after the threaded bolt was exposed i cut it flush and pushed it out the back...

I suppose it is silly to ask why you don't just leave them on. They aren't very heavy. If you use saddlebags you won't even notice them. And just once in a while you might even put your own feet on them for a brief change of position on a long ride.

It takes three wrenches and two minutes to pull the back wheel....
WTF?....

Awwww Now, you know that doesnt happen. I mean, NO ONE has ever lost an engine because the guy at the shop put the filter in bakkerds. OR lost an exhaust on the ride home from the shop.. nope, Never Happunt!
One other thing Ive noticed about wrenching time. I am Looking at the bike & checking for little things that need done. The "Pros" are racing th clock, because each job Pays according to a manual 7 that manual presumes every bolt is clean & loosens as if new & the tools are at hand & you dont drop anything. At least thats how it is on cars, maybe on bikes they can milk a 20 minute job into an hour?

Yeah.  I know every nut and bolt on my 95 Savage.  I'm sure most of the guys at the local dealer/shop have never SEEN a 95 savage.  BUT, if you have a trusted mechanic, that's a different story.

Yea, the thing is I want to put pegs under the seat, to have a standard sitting stance.  I dont want to put my legs back.  I just dont want a ton of pegs on it.  You guys will see. I will post picts when completed.

I took mine off a long time ago but it doesn't seem like it was an issue or difficult, ranking right up there with burping a lid on a tupperware bowl.

You know, I really don't remember taking them off.  I just know they are sitting on the shelf collecting dust with the other stock parts from this and other bikes.

I wonder if I remove them without breaking them, if I could remount them in the position I am thinking of.  Or will I have to get new ones...hmmm....will see....
