Title: Speedo visor and airbox covers
Post by diamond jim on 02/23/09 at 11:57:17

These are a few things that I picked up at the Chrome Shop on my Atlanta trip this weekend.

Speedo visor.

The speedo visor is actually a light visor for $4.  It took about 3 minutes with a dremel to make it fit perfect.

And new 18 wheeler wheel covers for the airbox at $4.50 each.

Thanks.  The toughest part was installing them without any obvious bolts or screws showing.

Are those the turn signal mounts you have way up there at the top? Are you going to pull them eventually? And... what's the process for pulling them? Removing the plate there with the bars and then pulling them off?

I'm not gonna leave them on like that.  I want to raise my headlight some more.  I've also been looking for a teardrop headlight.  Either way I might use the clamps for support for the headlight.  If I end up not using them then I'll pull them off.  I've read that you can raise the front end, loosen the fork tube clamps, slide them down some and slide the turn signal clamps off.  Others have broken then off I guess by wedging something in the space in the clamp and muscling it.

Ha ha.  Funny.  I'm just a guy that tries 3-4 versions of every mod til it evolves into something I like.  That's why I got good at finding low cost stuff.  I end up buying a couple of different things for the same mods!  Many of you talented modders out there would get it right the first time.

Here's the speedo visor I used:

Here's a pair of hub covers almost like the ones I used for the air filter side covers.  Hub covers come in this size ( 8 9/16") and a slightly smaller size of a little over 7" (which are the ones I've got I just couldn't find a pic of them online).

Thanks.  I just noticed that you can see me in the cover.  I was sitting down.

So - How are you holding the covers on? Weld a nut on the inside?

I have noticed in several of your post you state that you moved the headlight up. How?

I used a peice of 1" steel square tubing as a spacer between the headlight base and the bottom fork clamp where the headlight bolts on.  I drilled holes for the bolts and had to get 1" longer bolts.

Does the visor cover up the indicator lights at all from view while riding?

That'd be the only concern I'd have about installing something like this.

Not really.  But I don't use them for feedback anyways.  I can't remember the last time I did.  I habitually hit my turn signal cancel.  I always have.

The visor mod was one of two mods I was contemplating.  The other one would get rid of the indicators above the speedo altogether.    And my headlight stays on bright unless I flash it.  I'm betting you don't look at your high beam indicator to see if high beams are on either.  You look at the switch itself.

I'm one to hit my turn signal cancel switch pretty often too. Usually after any sort of turn, even if it didn't require a signal! Haha.

I leave my brights on a lot of the time too, until it gets dark and then I'll kick it down for uncoming traffic. I do a mixture of both though, between looking at the light and looking at the switch.

What would you put in the area where those lights are?

I don't know.  I've got a piece of chrome from the truck shop that could be easily modded.  Or maybe adapt a shroud from another bike.  Maybe like this:

Can you give some more info on the truck hub cap thing you did?  More pics?  How did you mount them?  Are the other components OEM?  Did you have to make anything/mod anything?

Here's the evolution of the mod.  The hub covers are mounted on the stainless steel bowls that you see in this thread.
