Title: Do you have Kuryakyn ISO grips installation tips?
Post by slowfaller on 02/21/09 at 02:18:21

Hey guys. I've ordered ISO grips and wanted some people who have them to chime in on the installation and share tips.  My clutch side is on fine but the throttle side is a bit of a pain.  The ISO grips packaging states to sand off the ribs that are on the throttle sleeve which I did with a Dremel.

Did you also have to sand down the collar near the ignition housing?  Did you use something other than the provided glue? Any ideas that would help the grip slide on the throttle house and then dry sticky would be great.  FYI I tried hairspray on the left side but that didn't hold.  It was pump hairspray though and not aerosol.

Thanks as always
Chris

I put them on my M50 maybe two years ago.  They share the same throttle sleeve as our bikes.  After examining and test fitting the grips I saw I had two options- 1) sand/grind down the ribs some to get them to fit, or 2)  sand/grind down the ribs completely and some of the collar to get them to fit they way they should.  It made me mad about how much work I had to do to get a really nice, clean install that I expect after paying double what most grips cost. To me, quality is in the details so I went with option 2.  I didn't need glue for the grip on the throttle sleeve.  Actually, I was going to use glue but after doing a final fit to ensure it was just right, the grip was on so tight that I couldn't get it off to in order to apply glue.  So I left it like that.  It squeezed the throttle sleeve some and I noticed a little bit of drag when turning the throttle.  I took off the whole throttle control assembly off, inspected the bar and found a couple spots of some residual glue on the bar that was causing the dragging.  A little sandpaper and some WD40 fixed it and it all worked fine.

Awesome DiamondJim, thanks for the reply.  After watching some videos on youtube I'm really surprised at the amount of work involved to install a lousy set of grips.  Another 10-15 minutes with the dremel and I should be set:)

Sure thing.  I hope all goes well. Post some pics when done.  It seems that not as many S40/Savage owners go with aftermarket grips as do owners of other cruisers do.  For a lot of other bikes a grip change almost seems standard protocol.  At least it's not as frequently talked about on this message board as other boards for other cruisers like the M50/C50, Vulcan, V-Star, etc.

I'll post pics when the grips and turn signals are installed which shouldn't be too long from now.  We're getting snowed on again here so I'm going snowboarding in a couple of hours. Iam hoping to see some nice spring riding days in March though.

I saw 4" of snow once in my life.  One inch a few times and throw in a couple of ice storms for good measure.  I've never seen a snowman with any section bigger than a bowling ball.  That's pretty much all I know about the white stuff.  I lived in central NJ as a toddler so maybe I saw some real snow then.   I went back there about every year til I was 20 but always in the summer.

So enjoy the snow for me!

I enjoyed enough snow today for all of the south. It took my wife and I 2 1/2 hours to drive to the ski mtn, then snowboarded as it snowed and drove home.  Just got home now and I've been up since 10pm! (I work thirds)

I'm looking forward to sleeping like a baby.
