Title: New Savage Problem
Post by buzcoats on 02/15/09 at 19:00:18

I just bought a 2002 Savage that hasn't been ran in about two years.  The good news is it starts but it only will run if you continually rev the engine, it will not idle.  The bad news is when you do, fuel leaks out the vent tubes that go from the top of the carb then up and under the gas tank.

I played around enought to discover that if I take the vacuum line off that goes to the fuel thingy, the bike runs and idles fine, until the carb runs out of gas.  It runs out because there is no vacuum to with the fuel in the on position.

Anyone know how to fix this problem?  Could the float be stuck?  Thanks.

Your needle valve in the carb is sticking open and the bike is actually flooding.  The valve is attached to the float.   It's a common problem with a bike that has sat for a while.  .

Options:
1) simplest but might not work.  Take the handle of a screwdriver and tap the carb fuel bowl to see if you can make it stop flooding.
2)  drain & drop the fuel bowl to check for crud.  Clean as needed.
3) Drop the whole carb and clean.

Also,  fresh gas and gas treatment.

Buz,

From your description, I think your experience with the petcock vacuum line is normal behavior if the carb's needle valve is stuck open.

I tapped on the carb and the same problem.  I have the carb off and am wondering if I can get to that valve without completely diassembling?

You guys are great.  I took the carb apart and cleaned everything.  I concentrated especially on the needle valve.  Put it all back together and it runs perfect.  Thanks a bunch.
