Title: Bobber/chopper seat on Savage?
Post by Jonny_Chicago on 02/10/09 at 00:56:20

Just wondering if anyone has tried the below seats on the savage?  I think because of there curve they would conform nicely to the frame.

Any opinions?

Once again, any input is much appreciated!

I think both would work good.  I've got one similar to the first one you linked to that I decided not to use.  It's the Jesse James with hardware (taped to the top just like I received it) that I'll sell for $30 total (including shipping).  I modded the stock seat instead and liked the look of it so decided to keep that look.

Now that's funny!  I decided to stay with this seat/saddlebag combo.  Otherwise I'd use it.

Big single, could you post some picts of that seat mounted.  Just so I get an idea?

Diamond Jim, your mod looks great!
Also, I am interested in that seat.  Does it look like that jesse james seat fits on the savage?  What gauge is that seats thickness, does it have a lift?  Could you send me some more pictures, perhaps side shots?  Does that $30 include shipping you said?  Let me know.

Thanks again!

Yep, includes shipping.  It is made from 10 gauge steel. Overall length is 13" from tip to back. It is 9" across. It has a sweeping 5" rise. Obviously you'd have to do a little modding to mount it.

Great,  I have no money right now (would buy it right now if I did), let me see if I can scrounge some up.  Could I let you know within the next few days?

Thanks again!

P.S. Do you know the length and width of the stock seat?  I would measure it myself, but my bike is in storage.

Also, would I have to do any welding or can this be done with basic tools?  Can you drill through that seat?  Just figuring out how I can mount it without welding it.

Don't know if this helps but when I laid in on my seat a while back it was about this size:
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh128/russ_diamond_jim/seatpanpic.jpg

My modded seat is narrower than stock because I removed some of the plastic seat pan and cusion on the sides.  If you like the big grandpa harley seats, like the ones on some police cruisers, then this seat pan probably isn't for you.  If you're wanting a classis bobber seat than this is just right.  You could run it bare and paint it or add some foam which will make the seat a tad wider.  I was gonna take it to the local community college and have the upholstery class do it for less cost.  We do that with car dings (autobody class), things that break (welding class), etc.  The only catch is that it usually takes about twice as long than if you paid a private person or company to do it.

I'd mount the solo seat so that the nose is about 1.5" to 2" further back than the nose of the stock seat. That would make it feel roomier.  I think it would work great because it follows the shape of the frame where it rises up for supporting the rear fender.

Wow, this is great.  Really appreciate the picture and info.  That does help alot.  Do you know if I can mount the seat without doing any welding?  Just want to bolt everything on.  Do you accept paypal?

I do like the classic bobber seats, I was thinking of adding some foam if it is to uncomfortable.  Good idea about bringing it to a college, never thought of that.  I was thinking about mounting it an inch or two back for space, just want to avoid doing any welding.

So it does follow the shape in the back where it rises up by the rear fender.  Thats good to know.  I know other bobber seats I have seen mounted just go straight across because the seat is flat.  That is what I was trying to avoid. I want it to conform to the frame.  Good info!

P.S. Would you be willing to trade a springer seat with the springs (about the size of the stock seat)?  If not, let me know.  I am still very interested!

When  you get to putting it on could you just sit it on the frame of the bike and take a photo of it for me so I can see how it matches the the way the curve of the frame? That would help me out a TON.

I will get some pictures up (will try tonight) of what it looks like on a "stock" frame. not sure how helpful it will be becouse thats all mine is right now is a frame. I love the seat and it does look like the size is just right for the savage size and tank....

Title: Re: Bobber/chopper seat on Savage?
Post by Jonny_Chicago on 02/12/09 at 10:43:42

Big single, what size did you go with?

Title: Re: Bobber/chopper seat on Savage?
Post by BigSingle on 02/12/09 at 11:39:06

Its the "wide" version thats sold on ebay. Actually is almost the same size as my stock seat. (that has been modified bobber style)... Im not a big guy at all but with the bike being wider and also planing on maybe going w a bare metal seat I wanted as much coverage as possible...It did take me awile to deside on wich with to go with becouse I like the smaller skinner seat....

Title: Re: Bobber/chopper seat on Savage?
Post by Savage_Amusement on 02/12/09 at 13:21:06

I have sat on my bike with out the stock seat on in that little dip area. I liked how it felt for me since I'm a shorter guy. That's why I want to see how it fits on the frame where it comes up and the rear fender mounts on. So showing me the frame will be exactly what I want to see. I haven't decided if I'm going to have it covered, or leave it raw and just have it powder coated or even spring it at this point yet.

Title: Re: Bobber/chopper seat on Savage?
Post by BigSingle on 02/12/09 at 15:28:31

yea thats kinda where Im at...not sure if going raw or covering...depends on how the reset of the bike comes out....

Here's what I was gonna do if I used it. You can get thin, very low profile rubber floor mats with logos such as the one below.  The one in the pic is small and for backseat passengers.  Many of the decorative floor mats are so thin they really don't work well as floor mats.  They are essentially flat.  I was gonna find a cool one, trim it a little larger than the seat, glue it on the seat pan and trim it nicely.  Just a thought.

Not a bad idea Jim.  I am also split about upholstering it or living it bare.  I guess it depends on its comfort.  I was thinking of using the padding and the material from the stock seat.  Then just putting the padding down and wrapping it in the stock seat material.

Big single, you got the bigger one, I got the smaller one ( 9X13).  We could both post are pictures of it mounted.  See how they compare.  I am just worried the one I got is too small.  I guess I will see how it looks and feels when I get it.  I will try and remember to post picts!

Title: Re: Bobber/chopper seat on Savage?
Post by BigSingle on 02/12/09 at 17:26:25

Yea the rubber mat idea is a good one...would deft. stick to the seat. That would be one thing about the bare way is it being slick and also will rust some and get on your pants...could spray like a clearcoat on it or something to prevent it from rusting or paint it....

i dont think it would be too small. There isnt alot of difference between the two sizes. Like I said if you got with a bare "bobber" style look it make the bike "thin" out some. Im personaly considering going with a different tank or something bc its so wide... just dont want to be stopping at every gasstation filling up bc I have a 2gal tank ;D

Title: Re: Bobber/chopper seat on Savage?
Post by Jonny_Chicago on 02/12/09 at 17:30:07

Yea, Im siked to see how it fits.  I dont think its to wide with that kind of seat (look below), I guess I will see when it arrives what I think.

However, if you think its to big you should checkout those peanut tanks.  Those are pretty cool.

If I don't cover it, it is going to get powder coated. Stuff will rust like crazy here otherwise. I took a TON of parts off my bike today to be taken down to the powder coater's. While doing that I was measuring out for a pan that I am going to make to go under the seat if I decide to spring the seat. I'm working on a custom battery box as well. We'll see how that turns out.

wow thats a pretty wild seat especially with the big red filter setup...I would personaly go all chrome on the filter but like the idea...

powdercoating would deft. be a good idea.

The frame its self isnt going anywhere..it has "less" flex than orignl. The seatpost Im gonna keep a eye on for a while just to make sure but I pretty sure its going to be okay...Cant tell from the picture but its made with thick walled steel tubing and very heavly welded( by a professional btw)

Yup should be o.k. When welds are done right and everything they should hold up just fine. Like in ARC welding a E6000 series electrode (rod) is supposed to hold 60000 PSI.
