Title: Which Saddlebags for Suzuki OEM Brackets S40
Post by SuedeGopher on 02/09/09 at 16:42:17

I just got a screaming deal on some OEM saddle bag adapters for my 06 S40 and noticed that the OEM complimentary bags offered are pretty small...has anyone had success using the OEM brackets and another brand of saddlebags?  As always, help is much appreciated!!!!

You should be able to use any brand that you want to with the stock brackets.

You're right... The stock Suzuki bags are far too small. I need to upgrade mine this year. :)

Mine were $99.  They are River Road bags.  Love 'em.

Are those the large or extra larger version Jim?

I strongly second the recommendation of the River Run bags.  I had them on my Sporty, and they were terrific bags, carried a lot, were effectively waterproof, and looked great.

They are the medium quick-release River Road part # 10-8921.  Size: 12” W x 9-1/2” H x 6” D.

The large bags are too big (simply my opinion) and the extra large... well, you could fit a spare front tire in one of those.

Quick release means they have the quick-release snap hidden underneath the straps that close the bags so you don't have to do the strap-buckle-loop thingy.  Trust me, you'll want those.

Zip Off bags are another option.  They are the ones that remove quickly from the bike itself via a large zipper mechanism between the bags and the yoke.  If you go with them then you'll want to keep a stash of zip ties around to anchor them to the saddlebag supports each time you put them back on.

The compact bags have the same width and height as mine only they are 5" deep instead of 6".

Dimond Jim,
Very nice looking bags. Do you have the OEM saddle bag adapters behind the bags too ?
Regards,
Miin

Those bags look just right!

Did you have to relocate the rear turn signal?

Nah.  I made mine from some Suzuki M50 saddlebag supports that I had in the garage.  Bought some bolts, nuts, washers and spacers from Lowes.

How do you lock a "quick release" bag? Seems an opportunistic thief could just open them up and clean you out.

Thumperclone - did you have to move your turn signals to fit your bags?

I imagine if it came with OEM bags then the rear turns were in the stock location.  I think the OEM bags are square, not slanted, and sized to fit in front of the rear turns.

Thanks. I saw the "extra large" bags and thought about all of the great stuff that I could put in there if I went on a weekend trip or something. :)

Then again, anything has to be better than the bags I've got now.

I think these are or are like the OEM bags.

Extra large bags look better on a larger bike with a full rear fender.  But a lot of bags that would look fine on a bulky 750 pound cruiser would likely look funny on our bikes without adding some mass on the back like a full fender and backrest.

If you do get larger bags I suggest you get some that follow the rear shock and rear fender lines.  Following the lines will minimize the bags looking too big.  Maybe something like these (at about $700 new though):

Here are some OEM C50 bags at about $300 new.

Both of those larger bags have about the same height and width of my River Road bags but they are about and inch wider (measured from the fender outward).  They'll give you maybe a 15% increase in storage area but usually cost a lot more.

Now for some examples that I don't like:

The "Hi, I'm the world's coolest grandpa" look:

Or the, 'I used to be a hippie now I'm the world coolest granpa" look:

WTF?  Did Sacagawea have a bike?:

Nice examples. :)

I'll probably stick with the regular sized bags... I can always add a sissybar bag combo if I need more room.

I'm planning a trip with a good car friend of mine who just picked up his first bike. His family owns a cabin on the PA/NY border, right next to a lake and wants to make a trip there. If nothing else, we'll just have someone follow in a car or something. ;)
