Title: Possible problem. Maybe fixed Post by saluteTOme on 02/08/09 at 16:01:28 I bet you love the topic :D anyway...being it was 63 degrees here today! I took advantage of it and went for a nice long ride. I kept running into a problem. I would be driving along in 5th, hit the gas and pull on the clutch. After I would do that, the bike would drop revs and shut off. It happened to me like 3 times. on the 3rd time I pulled over and messed with the air/fuel mix screw. I turned it more rich. I tried to create the problem again and I couldn't. So I think I fixed the problem...maybe? Would having a too lean mix cause the bike to shut off after a fast rev to no load from disengaging the clutch? I dont know too much about tuning the bike so since I re-jetted and got a dyna muffler, I brought a small screw driver with me. (thankfully) I hope this is the case. Btw, I did have the screw all the way in (not today)and i've been backing it out slowly to try to tune it as I have the bike running more and more. Also....AWESOME FRIGGING DAY TO RIDE! |

Title: Re: Possible problem. Maybe fixed Post by saluteTOme on 02/08/09 at 16:26:03 I thought that too but I already had raised it and I ended up lowering it after I enriched the mix. |
Title: Re: Possible problem. Maybe fixed Post by saluteTOme on 02/10/09 at 07:27:42 any other thoughts? |
Title: Re: Possible problem. Maybe fixed Post by diamond jim on 02/10/09 at 07:34:43 Anything been done with the white spacer? I'm still thinking either idle too low or running too rich if the white spacer has been removed. |
Title: Re: Possible problem. Maybe fixed Post by saluteTOme on 02/10/09 at 17:06:04 nope. white spacer is still in as far as I know. When I bought the bike, the mix screw was out. I re-jetted myself but didn't do the white spacer mod. |
Title: Re: Possible problem. Maybe fixed Post by Digger on 02/10/09 at 21:44:55 It might be worth checking out the petcock for proper operation. |
Title: Re: Possible problem. Maybe fixed Post by verslagen1 on 02/10/09 at 23:58:55 The rpms tend to overshoot idle and will dip down a 100 or 2 rpms. If you have it set at 1000rpm idle and do as you say, it could easily drop to 8 or 900 and quit on you. I think it does it cause it's a fairly large carb and at low rpms the air flow isn't constant enough to keep a good air/fuel ratio. |

how would I do that with on? Quote:
So maybe raise the idle a little bit more? |
Title: Re: Possible problem. Maybe fixed Post by justin_o_guy2 on 02/11/09 at 08:34:07 You could always blip the throttle a few times or hold it slightly open, to keep it alive at higher speeds. Seems mine was pretty sensitive to droping to idle from high speeds till I jacked the idle up. I know it would die if I I was running 80 & just let off the throttle & pulled in the clutch. Not so bad about it now, OR, I just developed habits that keep it from happening. |
Title: Re: Possible problem. Maybe fixed Post by Zylar on 02/11/09 at 09:01:28 Yeah, I've seen this on both mine ('01) and my moms ('98). When tuned perfectly and fully warmed up, runs great. While warming up or cold outside, tends to die at idle. I now have both idling just a tad high (by ear, no tach) when fully warm and they don't die at all. Any possible harm from running ~100rpm (1/16 to 1/8 turn on thumbscrew) higher idle? |

Title: Re: Possible problem. Maybe fixed Post by saluteTOme on 02/11/09 at 21:15:46 I shall do. I kinda doubt it's that, but you never know. I am going to give a higher idle a shot. It's also the 1st time I really ran the bike "hard" since oct/nov. I also need to do an oil change soon. Just need to get around to that. |
