My starter motor circa 2000, has failed, the armature and brushes look ok but the permanent magnets around the internal peripheral of the cylinder have de-laminated leaving bits of magnets fouling its spin.

The UK Stealership is quoting £507.00 ($354.00) at today's exchange rate
I have now contacted Bike Bandit who have it on their site to see if I can Import. I have also put out a "Locator" for UK Salvage.

However my question for your brains is this fault very rare or will the parts from a breaker be as bad as this is in fact "Common"

1, 2 3 or maybe 4 times..... but it is rare.

Reasons for delaminating in an electrical motor.
1) moisture, and I mean sitting in the rain moisture and foggy weather for days moisture, or never seeing the inside of a garage. The moisture will cause rust to form. That rust can get in between the magnets and the housing and push the magnets away. Then scrape and bang...

2) Heat. Heat can cause the glue to go bad and then the magnets might come loose.

But, not so sure it's a heat thing because it would be more common if it was. Especially in the US midwest states. More than likely the moisture thing. We all know the UK never gets rain or fog.......... NOT.

The Breaker part should work , but check it out for signs of rust.

iron core magnets dont like moisture one would think the starter is "sealed"but todays high pressure wand auto washers may have
broke the "seal"..
when i give my girls a bath its always low pressure with a garden hose,
sponge ,and bucket o soappy water..mostly i use a detailer type of spray bottle..here in the desert i dont have to ride in the rain much
imagine thats not the case in G.B.

Interesting views, I got the bike with 4K miles on it a year ago, and have put 3K on it.

The starter on the Sav is open to get water settling on it I suppose, but its been garaged and I dont HAVE to ride it in the wet.

I have not pressure washed it and the owner before only used it to go to church on Sundays, well left it in the garage for a year allegedly.

however it looks more likely to be moisture than heat, wondering if the "THUMP" broke the seal
