Title: moving the rectifier/regulator
Post by franch on 02/02/09 at 16:56:32

i have read everything i can find on this topic having "searched" it thoroughly.
it seems as though lots of folks move it "into or behind the airbox" or they put it under drivers seat or into the tool box.
how exactly does it fit in or behind the air box ?
or if it is to go into the toolbox are the wires long enough ?

You have to add a cone filter to put it in the airbox, and therefore not use the airbox for your air supply.  I have not heard of anyone putting in behind the airbox, but you can put it anywhere that it will be protected from the elements and still have enough space to dissipate the heat from the sink.  You can splice in some additional wire to have room to relocate.

Mine is under the seat, where the airbox snorkle use to be.  But my seat area does not resemble "stock" at all anymore.

One wire comes from behind the pulley cover and the other from the wiring harness, last mobil spot is right in front of the airbox.

That thing can run under water, you might keep it out of the sun though.

I've seen it mounted all over.  Under the seat on the fender, on the battery box, left side, front side, under the tool box cover.  on the right side of the rear fendar just above the swing arm.  Some said they put it in the air box, and I think some still had air running thru it.

So you're only limited by the amount of cable that's there.  Have fun.

Good thread this will help me as well as I am preparing to take off the p-pad and modify the rear fender.

I moved mine without extending any wires. To here:

Another spot, see it behind the bat box on the fender?

if one were to put it in the tool box would it get enough air ?

It doesn't need a lot air circulation around it, evidenced by its placement on the rear fender underneatht the seat.  But then again, it is mounted with the cooling fins vertical from the factory so it doesn't get the double whammy of poor air flow and poor heat emmision due to being mounted with the cooling fins horizontal.

I'd paint it gloss black to match the frame and mount it to the front of the tool box.

front of tool box seems logical  yet the heat from the engine makes me leary.
am i starting to sound fussy yet ?

It wouldn't be too much of a problem. When your sitting still most of the heat goes up. While moving there is enough air flow that it disperses the heat enough that it should work fine.
