Title: Cam Chain Advise
Post by Joe Friday on 01/26/09 at 13:15:24

Here's where I'm at...  Got the cover off and it looks as if my tensioner is almost all the way out.  What's my next step? Can I get more slack by bending the back piece on the adjuster?  Here is a picture:

You have 3 options:
1) bend the rear guide
2) buy or DIY mod the tensioner
3) replace chain and guides

if you decide to bend the guide, there's a risk of the plastic breaking off.

Options are:

a) replace Cam chain (I think they are $85 or $90 US).  If you have to pay someone to do it, could be pricey since either the clutch or the gear has to come off to get the chain out.  It's not a hard job if you have the right tools, just very tedious.   Putting back together requires close attention to details.

b) Modify the arm of the tensioner to get a touch more life out of it.

EDIT: Verslagen you beat me to it........

Hi Joe, you can do a quick search or check with Verslagy as an expert on the cam chain.  A quick measurement by you in mm will help..how many miles on the engine.  There are several fixes and yes, some have tried or at least thought about bending the guides to take up some of the slck.  While i ws typing the man himself answered. :D

Thanks fellows...  I have edited the photo and added the chain measurements that were asked for.  I show 0.445" or 11.303mm at the points indicated in the picture.  The scoot has 20,000 miles on the clock, but I don't know if the chain has ever been worked on or not.

If I pull the adjuster will the necessary changes I need to make be evident?  It looks like if I just replace the tensioner the new one will be in the same place as the old one.  (Joe Friday ain't much of a wrench)

Ah, a newbe with common sense.
You got it, tensioners don't wear out, chain and guides do.
But if you leave it in this condition long, the hole for the plunger will oval and you'll need a new one.
20k is about the right mileage for that amount of wear, although you could have done better.  Only a few have.
You can put in a verslavy  http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1180206459

Nah, just a newbe with a hell of a lot of experience at screwing up expensive stuff by jumping in too fast!...  LOL

You got mail, and I'll bump the other thread as well...

Thanks!

I've got a 1500 miles on my '06 S40.  Is there anything I should be doing now to minimize cam chain tension problems in the future or is it simply an inevitable problem down the road?

It's like death and taxes..inevitable; when it comes time at about 20K, you can look into the plunger modification and, if there are any around, the better chain.  and who knows, someone may have invented a chain guide mod by then. :D

Take it from the ones that have 30k+ on their chains... 50 wt. oil

Does Stinker use syn or just 50 wt ?

Would you fellers recommend replacing the chain guide when going to the new tensioner set up?  Anyone done this?

unless you take the head cover off, it's pretty hard to do.

You should look at your guide for wear and cracking.  I know it's hard to judge if you never seen one before.  One guy had some of the plastic break away.  Next question you have to ask yourself is whether you want to be there again.

How thick should it be?...  I have nothing to judge how much wear has occured...  Guess I could pull it out and take a pic of the thing...

A pic of the calliper reading would be better. Have to lay something in the channel & measure front to rear & subtract the thickness of the filler. Eyeballing wouldnt be too good

Unless you're going to remove the headcover, just eyeball the thing and make sure it's at least worn away smooth and that pieces aren't flying everywhere.

If you're askin' what I did, I took the cover off and replaced it.  Mine's a '96 and I don't know about aged plastic.  But if I knew I was going back in there in 2 years, I would have left it.

With the next cam chain I put in there (ss.com super cam chain) the next time it'll need maintanance will be to put a new bike on the cam chain.   :o
