Title: New Brake Pads
Post by paulchristi on 01/25/09 at 16:43:18

Thanks folks....just changed out my front OEM brake pads after 7500 miles.  Excellent how-to on the Technical Documents portion of this website.  Took me about 15 minutes, it's great when a job goes better than I thought it would.

The new EBC pads work great.  How come I put up with the squealing OEM ones for 7500 miles?  My testimonial:  If your front brakes squeal, change the pads.  I regret suffering in silence for all these miles!

Thanks paul. I have been thinking to ask on here...why do my brand new brake pads still squeel. Haha. I changed them a couple months ago and they still squeel. I didn't use brake quiet so was thinking about pulling them back out and using some. But, after reading your post, maybe it's cause I used new OEM pads huh?..maybe I need to junk these and buy some better ones >:(

I had the same problem with my rear brakes. I got some EBC shoes at the local Suzuki shop and they worked like a champ, no more squeal..

Any of the hard, quick stop pads will squeal.
the organics are softer and don't bite as hard.
make sure you test then and make sure they stop well enough for you.

Same goes for the rear.

+1

I use EBC organics on my bike (see signature).  They don't last too long, but they work well and don't squeal.

Verslagen how well do you like bendix?

squeals some, not like oem.  Stops like oem.

Regarding stopping power, I don't prefer a front brake with a lot of bite.  You don't want the front wheel to lock up on frosty roads, gravel, etc. or you're going down.  Most riders are in the habit of always using the rear brake to start slowing down, then using the front as auxiliary.  Another benefit of the EBC pads vs. OEM.

The difference between bendix/oem and ebc reds...

panic stop:
ebc, full hand, squeezing hard
bendix/oem, full hand, light to medium

so yes with ebc's you've got to squeeze the hand the same as the sphincter.

Hi Gamma,

I'm glad you asked.  I looked at my maintenance archives and discovered that I had misspoke.

My OEM pads lasted 3500 miles.  I replaced them with Ferodo Platinum pads.  Those lasted 4100 miles.  I replaced THOSE with EBC organic pads.  The EBC pads have been on the bike for 2000 miles now.

So, I really don't know how long the EBC pads last.  When I made the above post, I thought the Ferodo pads I used a while back were EBC pads.

So, all I really know is that the Ferodo pads lasted about 17% longer than the OEM pads.  The jury is still out on my EBC pads.

Thanks for allowing me to clear that up!   8-)
