when going to the chain conversion how wide of a tire and or wheel can you get on the bike

The wheel well of the stock fender maxes out at 7" wide.  You would have to space your sprocket out a good bit (run the chain crooked some) to dodge a tire that big and still fit inside the standard swing arm.

Things get tight (zero clearance on belt to tire on right side and on swing arm left side) when you get to 6.5" wide when using a stock belt.  This is where I am right now.

I got my 87 Savage used, but assumed that the 140/15 is the stock tire.... My 2004 Sportster 1200c only has a 150 tire on it and my friend's 98 Softtail only has a 130 on it..... If stock is a 140, it's already proportionately larger than anything ever offered on a Harley!
I'm just wondering.... WHY? :-?
Now if we're talking looks, IMHO the front rim and tire is proportionately a bit too wide..... :D

New Harleys have a 200mm rear tire on most models.I had a 150 on the '87 bobber with about 1/4" between tire, and belt.I would say the largest (bike) tire you could run would be a 160 disclosure ;)(MAYBE)not saying it WILL fit.

Well... I will let you know in a few days. there's a couple LSs on that german site with 4'' rim and 160s mounted on them. At least my rusty German makes me believe they are 160s :-)

I'm running a 150/80 - 15 at the moment.  Fit like it belonged there.  Just replace the fender bolts with button head allens and you are good to go. :) :)
