Title: Performance cam ?'s
Post by Simon on 01/17/09 at 11:44:00

okay so I am thinking off putting in a performance cam while putting in a new oil plug cap.  what i wanted to see is if i will have enough room to put the cam in while the engine is on the bike or if the engine has to be pulled off.  Thanks Simon

No problem Simon. I did the cam when I did the chain. No clearance problems at all. Just make sure the piston stays at TDC. The crank can move a bit with the chain off & maybe you wont see it & then the dang thing will be timed wrong when the cam goes back in.

when i did my cam chain, I pulled off the head cover while it was in the frame.  It's tight, but it can be done.  Putting it back together will take some thought though, there's one really long bolt in the center.  And you'll have to insert into the cover then put them on together.  I forgot, so I removed all of the mounting bolts and tipped the engine to one side and slipped the bolt in.  Knowing this and how tight it was, I'd say go ahead and remove the mounting bolts except the rearmost one.  And let it tip forward a little for some extra room.

BTW, takes just a little more effort to take the engine out of the frame.
Take the pulley cover and belt cover off, take the shock off, loosen the rear axle, slip the belt off the rear pulley.  There are a few wires to disconnect.  lay a few pads down, lay the bike down on them, wiggle the engine out of the frame, set it up and carry it to the bench.  Yeah it's heavy, more than 50 less then a hundred.

OHHHH Yea, & when you put the clutch actuator arm in the side cover make sure you hold the part the clutch cable hooks into UP or it will be trapped & a pain to resolve that little issue. I just bent the crap outta mine, others take all the bolts out & start over.

My BIL in Norway had his DRZ400S original cam reground and nitrided. An engine rebuilding shop machined it to specs from some cam manufacturer web catalog. It cost him about 60 Euros.

I have one of Lancer's performance cams in the FireLizard, they are well worth the money.

Someone out there got the Performance Cam with the more radical profile sometime last year; the one with more lift and duration than normal...I just cannot remember who it was.  Whoever it was, if you are reading this thread, please PM me because I would like to know how it is working out for you; what your other engine mod's are, etc.
Thanks
