Title: Engine Paint Job Post by AngloSaxon on 01/07/09 at 11:16:32 The old girl I'm rescuing has pretty badly corroded engine casings and the cylinder is a bit flaky so I was thinking about painting the parts with a flat black enamel....... Any thoughts? Am I going to muck up the engine or what? :-/ |
Title: Re: Engine Paint Job Post by Beatduck on 01/07/09 at 11:29:47 No, just clean as much as you can, knock the flakes off and rough it up with sand paper, then apply paint. Be sure to use paint specifically for engines or high temperature applications!! (grills, etc.) My vote is for Chevy orange!!! ;D |

Title: Re: Engine Paint Job Post by verslagen1 on 01/07/09 at 14:19:10 After you strip all the corrosion and clear coat off, just polish and seal with that "Zoop" stuff. Found it. http://www.zoops.com/product-listing.asp?ID=15 |

Title: Re: Engine Paint Job Post by sakara on 01/09/09 at 07:58:18 Nice! I rode on Christmas as well, but I live near Buffalo, NY. Not as fun of a ride...but the coffee shop was awesome. :) Thanks for the big pic! As for the casings, I sanded with 600, 800 then 1000 then used Blue Magic. I plan on touching up the jug with paint, but all else is now mirror-like. Here are some pics so far of my 87 project with one fork tube done and one not for contrast, one case cover and starter finished. Please note, this bike was sitting under a tarp in Western New York for twelve years...lots of corrosion. I'm an IT guy; if I can do it, brother, you can do it. :) Cell phone pics sorta suck... http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v647/240/106/584605773/n584605773_1943185_8658.jpg http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v647/240/106/584605773/n584605773_1921577_4900.jpg here's what it started out as: http://photos-b.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-snc1/v867/240/106/584605773/n584605773_1723889_2400.jpg |
Title: Re: Engine Paint Job Post by Gary On A Savage on 01/09/09 at 10:17:01 sakara, Nice job on the clean up. Like you've found, best way to clean it up is good ole elbow grease. I sanded my cases and forks down last year. Makes it look really nice. But you'll have to stay on them to keep them polished unless you put on a coating, like clear enamel or the zoop stuff. |
Title: Re: Engine Paint Job Post by sakara on 01/09/09 at 12:43:51 Oh yeah? What zoop stuff? :) |
