Title: Using different year engine Post by dieseldoll on 01/04/09 at 05:53:02 I have a 1987 Savage. The engine went bad, so I purchased an engine from a 1996 Savage. I know the trans is now 5 speed instead of 4 speed. Everything fit where it was suppose to. We had the engine on in a couple of hours. The bike does run, but when you go to shift the bike pops and backfires pretty bad. I bought the engine based on people telling me it would work. I have had the bike looked at twice, and I am being told they can not fix it. I put on the carburator from the newer engine also. I really like this bike, and I just know someone has run it this before. |

I am thinking of doing it myself. I am pretty sure I will have to splice in some of the wires, but I am willing to try it. |

They both have wiring diagrams which will help a bunch. It will help you with some of the real minor differences. Yes, the differences are minor so it can be done. For the wiring diagrams, I like the factory one better. FYI, my training is as a electronics tech. T Mack |

And IMO, you are thinking right in trying to work the new harness and CDI unit into the bike now. Of course you'll have to do some work-around to get all the old stuff to work from the new harness; but it should be a lot less trouble than trying to patch the new CDI unit into the old harness. Or at least that's the way I'd approach it in hopes it was the shortest and easiest way of going at it. Hope it all works out and you don't need any of the later model charging circuit stuff, like the diode pack, to be compatible with the newer stator/rotor in the alt/gen set. I don't think those things are a problem though. The main difference was with the CDI I think. As someone mentioned, the newer ones ran much more lean, and the CDI: timing probably had to be adjusted to keep from burning up pistons! I've heard it rumored before that the older model CDI has a better performing timing curve in it; but honestly, having had both, I can't tell much difference beyond favoring the 5-speed transmission a bit. |
