Title: Air Filter Mod
Post by DracSavage on 01/01/09 at 12:52:30

Hey everyone & Happy New Year!

Things are finally getting back to normal so it's time for me to start working on my bike again. I was thinking of modifying my air filter/air box. I thought I had seen some threads on here before but I've searched and searched and can't seem to find them now.

I was thinking of removing the air box and adding a cone filter. I thought I had seen someones suggestions on the tube they used and possibly even the filter as well.

If anyone has done this or has any thoughts I would be very grateful for your help.

Best,
Ben

Search cone filter with "all posts" selected came up with several hits.

Thanks, I apparently forgot to change the drop down to "all posts" that helped. ;)

By all means if anyone has any suggestions or even pictures handy that they would like to contribute to my project I'd happily accept them. I'll post some pics myself once I get done.

Thanks,
Ben

Thank you very much! This is extremely helpful as I am also going to re-jet while I'm changing out the air filter.

Great pics also! Looks nice.

Thank you, this does help a lot. Does anyone think it is better as far as air flow, noise or anything else, to attach the cone directly to the carb or to use some hoses to get it to the empty space where the air box will no longer be.

Thanks to everyone for input.
Ben

I think it looks cleaner and meaner mounted directly on the carb. In theory it eases the air flow too. But you would have to move the battery back a little to where the airbox used to be. Takes custom brackets, though. Or go wild and bob the whole darn thing :-)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and input. All very helpful. I ended up moving the battery box back to where the air box was and now I'm just waiting for the cone filter that I ordered off of Amazon to get here tomorrow. I'll post some pics of the final project.

How did you move the battery box?

Well... I'm kind of a welding fiend so I welded it to the frame at an angle and I access the battery cables for removal from under the seat. Where it sits I should not have to remove the battery case until I'm ready to put some other type of case there.

I've been curious about something on this mod for a while now.  We get a stupid amount of rain around here most of the winter, how do those filters handle it?  Both going down the highway in the rain, and sitting out in the rain?  It would seem to me they'd be kinda exposed, but maybe I'm just imagining things. :-/

i do park mine outside and when rain is expected i slip a sandwich bag over the filter, i dont generally ride in the rain but the couple times it rained while i was out i didnt have any performance issues, i think because my leg sits over the top. riding with no front fender is like a garden hose spraying in your face at full blast.....sucks, lol

I bet! ;D  Mine's pretty much all stock (for now) and now that I've got a little bit of rain gear, it's kinda fun to ride in the rain.  Of course I haven't been out in a downpour yet either! :o

Here's the air filter mod I'm working on.  I'm gonna get a different air filter for this setup but I put my cone filter on so I could ride this afternoon. I grabbed my camera when I got back and snapped these pics real quick but tomorrow I'll take close up pics.
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh128/russ_diamond_jim/S4021453.jpg

The filter looks funny like this cause it's so small.
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh128/russ_diamond_jim/S4021449.jpg

It doesn't stick out much.  I'll probably go with an oval air filter setup.

DJ where'd you hide the battery?

I still can't get over how sweet Diamond Jim's seat and tail light set up is.
I wish he had step by step pics of that posted.

Very nice DJ. Your work always amazes me!

I'd like to know where the battery went too. :)

Oh yeah.  I forgot about that.  I made a compartment in the right saddle bag for the battery.  I had to make new wires for it.  The positive wire is about 4" longer and the ground wire is about 12" longer.  It takes up about 1/3 of the saddlebag space on that side.  I use the left bag more than the right one so it worked out great.

Thanks.  I think modding the rear gives the bike a whole different look and attitude.  I've posted several things about mods to the seat, rear fender clean up, rear fender lowering and lighting/tag setup.  Later I'll find them for you Jay and PM you the links to the posts.

I would've guessed that it was in the bag. :) Nice spot.

A lot of DJ's info is in this thread: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1233000795

He talks about his seat mod, the fender lowering, and the tail light in that.

Wow Jim, that looks great! What kind of tubing did you use to route the air filter from the carb?

That seat does look awesome. Good job.

I don't know if you guys saw this on one of the other post but check out the air filter and intake. It is pretty cool.

DJ your bike just gets better. Did you have to rejet the carb when you changed the exhaust and air filter?

Mowhawk, I love that setup in that pic.

It's made from PVC with some trimming.  I've got it setup up to run a filter on either side or both sides.  I like the both sides look.  I don't like the way it looks in the pic cause the filter looks so puny compared to the open space.

I'd love to do a pair of these with one on each side:

But that ain't gonna happen.

Yeah that would look cool. Did you say if you had to rejet the carb?

One thing I was wondering about that last link I posted, It looks like it is right in the way of where your leg would go.

All the carb stuff was done last fall.  Perfromance-wise, it's the same setup just with a little longer distance for the air to travel from filter to carb.

I had a great idea of what to do with it.  During lunch I picked up the stuff needed to do some mods for it.
