Title: seat/ hardtail mods
Post by sitkasavage on 12/28/08 at 20:24:37

I am thinking that I want to start making some mods on my '05.

The first thing I want to do is start with the seat.  I am 6'2", so I get a numb ass after about 30 minutes of riding.  It usually isn't a big deal, as we only have 14 miles of road from one end to the other (I live on an island in Alaska), but when the weather clears up and the sun does shine I want to make the loop a couple of times.  Does anyone have a suggestions?  How about a pan seat?  Is there on on the market?

I also want to make it a hardtail.  I found a bar from d z customs on ebay for around $80.  It is unpainted, but simple.  Is there anyone out there who makes a conversion kit any better?  Should I steer away from this company?

Mike

These hardtail bars are only flat stock with a couple of holes in it.
Any body with a drill can do it if you can make 2 bar precisely alike.

search for paladin's ultra sprung seat.  or gort's if you like a big seat he's tall too btw.

You are complaining about the seat comfort AND want to make the bike a hard tail? You are going two different directions here.
1st you want comfort
2nd you don't
Make up your mind if you want the look with the hard tail or want comfort with a bigger seat. If you go with the hard tail put a little pan seat on with the minimum of upholstry. That looks tough.
Thats my 2 cents worth.

Hey, my wife is 6'2" also, so I can visualize your problem.

In the first thread: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1214523580/0#0

Pictures of me and the wife on the stock Savage.  Note how comfortable I look.  Note the wife's cramped position.

First try at the seat mount.   Rear mount is simply a piece of 3/4" x 1/8" bar stock with twisted bends on the ends to mount to the stock rear seat mounts.  Saddle sits above on the three inch springs.  Front mount is simply a U bracket to hold the nose pivot of the seat welded to a flat bar that bolts to the stock front seat mount.  (No modifications to the bike at all.)

Note how comfortable the wife now looks.

I'm a bit shorter, so I modified my mount to bring the rear springs about 3" down and 2" forward: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1214704691/0#0  This is just about perfect for me.  Point being:  no matter what your size you can make mounts to place the saddle exactly where you want.

As for hardtailing, why?  I cross railroad tracks on the way to work.  Prior to the sprung seat I bottomed out the springs and had to pull my butt off the saddle to avoid a nasty jolt.  With the sprung seat both sets of springs bottom out and I can remain sitting.

LMAO.... Join the ranks. Without doing the seat mod,, ( numb ass ) is always going to be a problem. I did the mod, raised the front approx. 1 1/2 '', and it definetely has helped lengthen my stay in the saddle. I would recommend doing this easy mod.

I was going to start a new threat but I'll jump on this one. Any of you Savage riders throw some solid struts on and NOT spring the seat? I'm looking into going the hard tail route to mod some way to accomodate a passenger at times. Just curious if the everyday ride is going to be assss uncomfortable as I foresee. I don't ride for real long distances so I'm not really too concerned and I'm sure the ride is going to be cr8ppy for the passenger, I'm just curious how much worse it will be. Thanks folks

ya I know..it's gonna suck. But with the fender I put on it, I can't think of another way to ride w a passenger if it comes up. My girl wants to ride w me sometimes. Thinking I'd have to solid strut the rear and mount some supports from the fender to the swingarm.
