Title: Idle problem, Petcock, carb or both?
Post by RobT on 12/21/08 at 11:27:58

I have a 95 savage with about 7k miles on it. I normally leave the petcock in the on position. But after about 5-10 minutes of idle or stop and go traffic the bike stalls. Putting it into prim gets it going again on the highway it runs fine in the on position. So I believe the petcock needs more vacuum than the carb is giving so is the petcock bad or the carb needing a rebuild?

Oh, it was also backfiring a lot so I enriched the mixture and that went away (except a one loud one when I shut down).

Anyone have advice on what to check?

Yes, I could run the bike in prime just fine...but I would certainly forget to put it back into on before walking away from it. So I would at least like to try and fix this the correct way.

You have three choices.

1.  Replace the petcock with a new LS650 petcock

2.  Replace the petcock with the kawa yammy one that fits.

3.  Do the petcock mod and get rid of the vacumn line.

I too have a 95...with similar problems.  I opted for the third choice.

:)

I would start out cheep replace the vacuum line and clamps.

I have new vacuum and fuel lines already.

Eliminate the problem completely - trade for a bike with fuel injection. But then, you wouldn't have a Savage.

I'd say go with the new(er) petcock. I found one from a 2002 on ebay for $20 that worked great on my '86.

I read somewhere that the "widely available"
petc0ck valve for raptor quads fits the savage.

BTW: I always run my bike w/the valve on the
PRI position (always leave it there too, never
leaks) I don't remember why exactly I do this
but I think it had something to do with having
problems with the ON position.

Also my backfireing stopped completely after
I changed to a bigger main jet (+ screw 2 1/2
turns out), removed my air filter door and
moved on to a hot plug (which I use for the
city only) and change to a normal plug for
roadtrips (did plug-door mod ;)).

good luck

I had petcock nightmares that I misdiagnosed as carburetor slide problems.  I did the modification to make it manual, and I haven't had a single problem since.  IMO, it's a terrible design flaw that could even get you killed.  I had both problems:

1.  Cracked vacuum line that caused full throttle stalls (not good when you're trying to compete on a freeway).
2.  Screwed-up diaphragm or something that caused the bowl to run out out gas until the engine was hot.

Here's a couple of things you can do...
1. replace vac line (noted you've done this)
2. put clamps on vac line (any leak is bad) zip ties are fine.
3. R&R the petcock, check "fuel filter" for dead mice and such.
4. The petcock can be taken apart.  Check the diaphram and passages for any crud.
5. Convert the petcock to manual or buy a rapture petcock.
