So I took off the crank case cover yesterday so I could strip and polish it. I put everything back together how it goes (or at least I thought I did). I needed a new battery so I went to get one today, and I put it on, filled her back up with oil and tried to start it. At first I was getting alot of clicking and then some buzzing and now nothing. I feel like there is nothing wrong with my battery connection but I don't know why it won't start. I want to avoid taking the crank case cover off if I can but it may be unavoidable. Any ideas?

Take it to a dealership.

I'd drain the oil, take it apart again, and see if i missed anything. Yeah you will have to put another gasket on, but in my opinion, double checking is worth 20 bucks.

Sure be nice if these threads that start off with some sort of "HELP" request would also include some idea of the help needed.

At a wild guess, your shiny new battery wasn't fully charged when you got it.

It's definately not the battery It's one of those that are ready to install without charging, plus it was doing the same thing with my old battery once I put a charge on it.

Check the ground connection to the engine case.
Definitely sounds like a bad connection

also, you can take the case off w/o harming the gasket because it's new. Just becareful and check that its not suck on one side and the other too. And if you want to save the oil, you can tip the bike on one side and you won't loose more than a tblsp.

I had a lot of that last week, even had
to push the bike 12 blocks home once.

Just bought a new yuasa yesterday, yay!

I suggest you start by eliminating possibilities.

- 1st Try CAREFULLY hooking up your
bike w/your car's battery and try
starting the engine, that always works!

(+) goes directly (and CAREFULLY) in your bike's (+) battery and
(-) goes in your bikes frame.
I clamp the (-) on the clutch
lever ontop of the oil window.

- IF that does not work look at all your
grounds and connections, maybe the
starter's terminals are lose (next to the
engines clutch lever)

- Check you fuses (under seat, right side, little black box)

- If all fails open your crack case and play syler.

I'll have to check the battery and connection tomorrow, but assuming all that is ok, According to the manual I had to rotate the alternator rotor bolt to take that case off. Could the piston be in the wrong position for the bike to start?

Where the piston stops when you turn off the engine nobody knows.

However, if it's bdc, it may develop enough compression to keep it from turning over if the decomp solenoid wasn't working.

Did you try push starting it?

I did actually try that, and it turned over maybe once, but I was afraid to do it too much as I didn't want to mess anything up.

Do you have a digital multimeter - pretty easy to get a reasonable idea on the battery.

Which side did you take off?

I have a battery tester. I took off the left-hand side where the alternator rotor bolt is located.

That's the side with the starter.

I think you didn't get it back together right.

Take it apart, someone here has done the same thing

don't remember what though, something about the order of the washers and it was greg's cd that came to the resque.

that sure what i'm thinking - if your sure the battery is good and you've had the that side off it's possible to get the washers in the wrong place and bind the starter gears

I can't remember who did that a couple years ago - I'll go on a search

Looks like a couple folks have locked the starter -

do a search on starter gears washer and set the time frame to all posts

I think it's this - if you put washer #2 on shaft #4 you'll lock it

A couple of things to help you troubleshoot....

1) take the sparkplug out. It will relieve the presssure in the cylinder and let the starter turn easier.

2) Take the plug out of the Left cover (TDC inspect port cover??). Take a socket (metric) and rotate the engine. Turn same direction as wheels turn when driving down the road (CCW?). With sparkplug out, you should be able to turn the opposite direction a little too, but should be stiff to turn because you are trying to turn the starter too... If it only turns one direction and doesn't turn the other even a little, then starter gears are pinched (trust me on this one.... )

3) Use a boat trolling motor battery to troubleshoot starting problems. It doesn't have the cranking amp's of a car battery but has a long drain down time. It saves the life of the small MC battery. If you don't have one, borrow one....

Well there will be no more work done on the bike today. One of the screws that holds the crank case cover couldn't handle the torque and broke off. So I don't know what I'm going to do now.

If you pull the cover back off, can you get to the "nub"? Put a slot in it & use a screwdriver?

The other side of that coin is, you dont Need a replacement till you get that one out.While the bolts are out, you can haul one to the store & get a few.

I forgot to post what the fix was to getting it started. Apparently is was the washer. I must of had it on the wrong gear shaft which caused the starter to bind. Anyhow I got her started and she runs good.
