Title: The Savage.....it LIVES!!!!!!!!
Post by shiphteey on 12/13/08 at 15:27:52

Having picked up the 96 model with a missing fuel tank and dead battery I picked up a new battery, added acid and charged it up overnight.  Held off on buying a tank because I wanted to see how good/bad the motor was.  :-/

With the old spark plug in (correct one at least  ::) ) we shot some starter fluid and sea foam down the intake/airbox with the air filter removed.  Filter wasn't in the best of shape:

Old oil seemed at least level....after a few tries you coudl hear it sputtering.... :) .... kept cranking....and heard more of a putt...putt.....miss.....putt.....and then it actually fired....for a couple seconds at least!   ;D  It sounded like an....older Volkswagen Beetle  :o out th exhaust!

Decided to see how gunked up the carb was ...  :o  fortunately I didn't actually have to clean it (Thanks Mike!).  He also removed his small gas tank from his 125cc pitbike and hooked it up to the carbs once they were cleaned.  Float bowl before and after was night and day  :)  Drained the dark brown oil, filled it with some Repsol Semi-Synthetic 10W40.

Bike kept backfiring, figured maybe it was running too lean.  Threw the old filter in and seemed to smooth out a bit.  We bungeed the gas tank on, kicked the tires and gave it a go.

WHOA this thing has virtually NO stopping power.  Note to self:  Buy some new pads and bleed the brakes  :)

Went through a few of the gears down the isolated street....wow....quite a bit of pep from this thing.  Didn't want to flog it too hard and with usable torque, there really isn't a need to.  Shifting seemed just a little rough but it wasn't bad really.

Overall I was impressed!  3 out of 4 signals work, low beam and high beam work, bike pulls pretty strong...even with 80psi compression  :-/ maybe it will loosen up with some harder running and sea foam  ;D

Tires are dry rotted but hard on the brakes it doesn't even lock up so definatley need a pair of pads first.  Everyone was trying to jump on and do burnouts on the bike, I had to keep elbowing them off and away  ::)

Glad it runs, now I'll start the hunt for a tank...I'll need to wait for the funds because I'm flat broke (in case the $150 purchase price didn't give it away).  Once a new air filter comes in I'll dyno it and scan the charts up.

$150.00 for a start? You'll have a blast dragging stuff together & making it all go.
Just a note, that airfilter? If that thing was what stood between the engine & dirt & the damage it causes, I would not be surprised to need rings. That thing is UGGlEEE

Well don't forget that is the airbox side, not the motor side.  Motor size shows the metal screen so filter seems have done its job.  Valves could be a little stuck (peering down into the spark plug hole wasn't pretty) but I didn't do a leakdown test.  I'll see how it does on the dyno.  Oil level was filled a little high so before the test I'll set the oil level in between the low and high lines on the sight glass for consistency.  Our dyno is pretty stingy...my Ninja 250 shows 28 HP to the back wheel at best...and thats after its good and warmed up.  R1s show in the mid to high 140s, even my 12 on nitrous shows lower on our dyno than others.  Curious to see how it performs WOT in 5th.  If a/f looks ok on the dyno and I get the brakes changed I'll be sure to do a real world top end pass on GPS  ;D  It should be somewhere between my dog:

And the ZX-9R:

Stink bug in the air filter,  you must be close to the Philly area....  Lord I hate them, I wish the Chinese would have kept them .....

Low compression..... Seafoam or even WD-40 down the spark-plug hole will help the rings.  WD-40 burns farily nicely so you will barely notice it in there.  Also, spray down the compression release lever by the sprack plug.  Maybe it's stiff and not fully releasing.

Also, remember that the auto-decompression is in there when you do your test.  It's on a timer......
