I am going to be buying a 1987 Savage and I'd like to know if anyone can tell me the significance of the model designations "P" & "F". :-/

Handlebar style, P is pullback, F flat. Master cylinders were slightly different in early models, I suspect cable and wiring lengths also.

About all the difference I know about, and I do not know much, is the handlebars.

And the risers are longer in the F model.
The master cyl. is different for the P and F model.  The F model master is more compact.
The wiring and cables for the P model is a couple inches longer.

Good question, and answers. I went through the same thing yesterday while looking at brake pads. LS650P or F? Thought that it may have been something to do with the California models. Thanks for that. Now we know.

Yep, thanks. I forgot to mention the risers, ours is F model with pullbacks at the moment so I've the taller risers myself.

There's a minor issue with F model master cylinder with pullback bars, hose exit is relatively high. It could be a problem if the fluid was low and bars were adjusted back/down a bit. I keep the bars 'up' so the grips and master cylinder are close to horizontal.
