Hi all!

Bike all of a sudden "chokes" bad on 1st gear
(from Neutral to 10mph) sometimes even dies
on me on a red>to>green light w/cars reving
& honking behind me, yikes!

After a small 1 or 2 second struggle it suddenly
"picks up" and zooms to 60 in a few seconds;
however this is dangerous and basically takes
away all the fun of owning a savage:
The Tractor Torque ...pls hlp!

BIKE INFO: 1997/7,000mi/open exhaust/
160main jet/mostly stock/top speed:85ish

- Bike starts fine
- Idles perfectly
- Low end (2nd gear and up) has LOTS of torque
- Mid/top end fine
- Vacuum tube seems fine
- Bike is running a bit rich but well (no recent mods).

(I think) it all happened after a the jolt the bike got
after hitting a darn pothole, a few feet after that it
felt like it was out of gas, tank was 1/2 full.
...Then again this event could be unrelated.

New weekend project, yay! :P

What could it be?

- Stuck throttle valve?
- Stuck carb slider tube thingy
- Worn/lose floater arm/valve thingy
- Dirty pilot jet?
- Electrical prob?
- Damaged spark plug cap?

real easy check is the coil wires - if they're loose you'll have a rough time

Agree with Reelthing, that jolt with the pothole could have loosened a wire.

might also check if your brakes are sticking... and wheel bearings are o.k....

UPDATE:

Nope, all electric is fine, took me hours going through all
that magical and mysterious electric system our bikes have
(P in the A)

All seems well, checked all cables, contacts and connections.
Maybe the coil itself needs replacing, but i doubt it, spark
seemed strong. (How much a savage coil cost anyway?
can I get one at autozone like for an small Japanese import?

I THINK IT'S THE CARB!
Something must have gotten stuck or lose in there;
I think it has to to do with the bowl valve or slider.

What makes a bike choke at the slightest request for
power to get moving but then at mid/high-range works fine?

Any more ideas?

It rolls freely with little effort.

Sometimes a float sticks & needs a Rap on the carb to let go. Maybe the jolt was sufficient to cause a float adjustment change? I doubt it, but who knows? Guys, is it possible? They get to needing adjusted somehow..

Ehhh, went & read the symptoms again,, Id say I am off target, but Ill leave this, maybe someone will hit on something as they point out why Im so wrong..

couple of possibilities to check...

1) A phenomenon most noticeable in single cylinder carbureted engines. At idle & at higher RPM's the fuel-air ratio's and the pressures in the engines are optimum and you get easy combustion. But in the "In-between" region, it's not as easy. A weak spark, a vacuum or air leak can cause exactly what you are getting. The "Blah" when cracking the throttle. Check Battery connections, check the vacuum line, check for something loose around the carb. A way to check for air leaks on the intake side of the engine is to lightly spray some carb cleaner around and see if the idle changes.

2) Dirt... the bump may have loosened up something in the fuel system and it got stuck in the carb circuits. Drain & Drop the fuel bowel to look for crud.

DONE! =)

Well I guess everyone was right. ;D

* The spark was kinda weak, I changed the
battery acid and slow charged it; it's good for now
but I need to buy a new battery soon, no big cranks
in my area though.

* The carb was filthy and the bowl moreso,
after only a year! good god.

Cleaned inside-out, polished the slider w/electric toothbrush
& a paste made from baking soda + silverware cleaner and
is now babybottom smooth and unplugged a dirty airjet.
BTW: I Used a ultrasonic jewelry cleaner for all small parts
& bowl, mygod! I loooove that thing!!!

* A cable that came from the key switch was kinda lose
under the seat (fat-green connector), maybe that affected
performance and the (-) battery pole was touching the case and
maybe draining the battery; I used some little thick rubber square
to insulate it; plus cleaning all contacts I'm sure didn't hurt.

* Made plug-door mod I wanna remove that annoying gas
tank as little as possible, Jeeez what an awful design!
(it's the valve or the chassis, you
cannot put both there, who design this?!)

-battery post can touch ground & not cause a problem,+ on the other hand will create problems & in a Hurry.
