Title: carb spitting fuel backwards.
Post by PipJones on 12/09/08 at 14:03:21

so, i put a 155 main in my carb, and i installed everything backtogether
except the intake boot for the carb.

*PUSH* *PUSH* *PUSH* (my battery is dead)
and off she goes!!!

i noticed i was spitting fuel at my airbox..... this is normal???
if not, what causes it and what can i do to fix this issue.

You might need a new float bowl gasket. Maybe that big black hose connected to the back is not on snuggly. I was missing my float bowl gasket and I was pissing gas, not spraying, but pissing down.

see, i didn't connect the big black hose to see if i was spittin' fuel backwards.... which i am. I'm gonna attatch the intake boot tomorrow and push start her again in 30 degree weather! Yay for cold fronts!!!!!!!!

Pip--I just recieved and installed a BigCrank XLT 15 Battery in my s40. Sealed, no water and fits great.  Got tired of the drama everytime I went to start it.  Best 65 bucks I have spent. It came from  BatteryMart.com

So I'm putting the finishing touches on my bike, putting her all the way
backtogether and everything.

I start her up and she's running pretty well (alot better than she has been), and then i notice a fluid leaking down the rear fender....

gasoline from the airbox. Apparently the Carb is throwing alot more
fuel backwards towards the airbox than i had thought she was.

Is she pulling too much fuel? to large of jets? any ideas?

thanks again

ok just for grins pull the vac off the petcock - and cap both ends - put it on PRI and run it, next thing to do is check the float for proper adjustment - easy to do if your carb has the side screw drain on the bowl - pick up some clear fuel proof line hook it drain and open the screw - if your is like my '95 it's a bit harder to do as a plug just unscrews on the bottom of the carb -

which do you have?

make shure your "over flow lines " are not pluged or running one into the other, try running it w/ out any at all and see what happens. I had the same problem and thats what I did

mine has the drain screw at the bottom of the bowl.

the whos-ee-whats-its????

"overflow lines"???? what are them?

Two vent lines that attach to either side of the carb and run up under the seat open ended.

I have had the same problem with the gas running out the vent tubes.  The fuel went down the muffler without me knowing, the bike back-fired when I turned it off, caught the fuel on fire, and I spent the next minute (eternity) beating the flames out with a random towel I had in the shop.

So what to do to prevent this from occurring again? Replace the float bowl gasket?

Thanks,

Drain your float bowl.

I did, but it returns after some time passes (about four to five rides to work and back).

Does this mean the jets maybe partiall clogged, or the float needs to be adjusted for a more shallow bowl?

Suthrn,

You could have some dirt on the needle valve seat.  I'd get into the carb, clean it, and check the float height.

If that doesn't work, you may want to try a new needle valve.

IHTH!

how do you check the float height?

The quick & simple check.....

Get a clear hose to fit on the fuel bowel drain.    Lenght should be enough to go from the drain nipple to above the carb.    Level the bike as best you can.  Connect the hose to driain nipple, route it upwards.  Set the petcock to PRI.  Then open the drain screw.  The fuel in the hose will go to the same level as in the carb.   That level should not go over the seam where the fuel bowel meets the carb body.

If it's too low or too high then you need to drop the bowel and do the adjustment.  Some people say you can do it on the bike....  I haven't tried.

I appreciate the help.  I'll check the float, then the needle valve if necessary.

Thanks,
