Title: Chrome for the engine
Post by bluesavage218 on 11/21/08 at 13:12:06

I've got a 97 Savage, and I'm going to be dumping some money into it over the winter. Is there any place to find chrome parts for the engine?

You can find other chrome goodies,...just not any for the Savage motor that I know of....
Sorry for the terse original reply... I thought others would chime in with more ideas.

yup, just remember you will have to retap any bolt holes as they get chromed also and get smaller because of it.

WHY ! I always thought chrome was for Harley's.
I do not want to be mistaken for a Harley rider.

I think polished aluminum looks 100x better than chrome on most things. The case covers polish nicely if you use the right stuff and are motivated. I'll post better pix of my covers if you want to see them. If you want the chrome head cover pcs I'll sell you the ones I took off my bike, they look brand new.

I'll see if I can get some pix up later tomorrow, heading to work now. There was another member that had pix on here that got farther in the polishing than I did. Haven't had the patience to finish all the oxidized parts like the brake cylinder and some others. I USED  to use a polish that I found at a gun show. It was a 3 part system and I believe it was called "heavy metal" polish. Haven't made the effort to find it since I ran out so now the best thing I've found is the Mothers billet polish. It's a small can and about 12-15$ but. I start off with a 00 or 000 steel wool and then polish away with the billet stuff.

the only bad part about chroming aluminum is that you have to polish it first, most chrome shops won't touch it if its not.

That and dont try and crhome any cooling fins as it wont cool the motor worth crap and over heat... but the rest of it should be fine.

I think I'm gonna go with polishing the aluminum. It sounds cheaper. Ha

Was getting set to post some close up pix of my polished pcs and decided I might as well give this post that I ran across some credit. I did it pretty much like this also but I used wet/dry sandpaper and steel wool till it was pretty close to what I wanted. Then hit it a few times with the billet polish. Didn't use a machine, just hard work, but it looks the same as this.  http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1182464837 Oh by the way, I've heard people have different opinions about this but I was taught you're supposed to try to polish with the grain of the metal.Another useful link for ya http://www.motorcycle.co.uk/articles/polishing/how_to_polish_metal.html Have fun! The results are very worth the hard work

Thanks for the links. I've just wirebrushed a dozen years worth of corrosion of my cases (slowing doing a restore this winter) and these will help a ton. Now for the elbow grease...
