Title: wrap or paint the exhaust?
Post by odvelasc on 11/20/08 at 18:45:00

Hello all,

should I wrap or paint the exhaust system? I am driving an all black '02 sauvage de suzuki.

I think if my bike was flat black Id wrap my exhaust.

Then Id paint it.

Wrapping tends to rust the pipe, and can smell when wet...I'd paint,..
But wrap has it's fans...
Whip Hop too...

If one likes the look of pipe wrap, but is concerned about the exhaust pipe rusting, then how bout painting the exhaust first with a high-heat, rust inhibiting paint and then wrapping it? A black exhaust wrapped with a beige or white wrap would look killer! 8-)

exhaust wrap theory(looks aside)is to retain the heat in the pipe to help expel the gasses

Personally I think wrap looks like the person didn't have the skill, materials,  equipment or whatever to paint the exhaust. Painting when done correctly can really add to the appearance of any style including IMHO rat bikes. With that said an improperly done paint job can look worse than rust.

Hey rd,

Here is a pic of my tank. I just removed it last night in order to put on the chrome trim I just received.I fixed a golf ball sized dent right on the front corner and my lady's father repainted it OEM black for me. Suzi looks sooo much better without the sticker.

>:( I take umbrage to that remark! I wrapped mine because that was the look I wanted, skills or lack thereof, not withstanding, which is, be as it may, neither here nor there. It came out great in my opinion. Me on the other hand, ain't wrapped too tight.  :D

I say go with paint.... but be careful when you do it. I thought I got all the rust off mine before I did but I was so wrong! any where that the paint doesn't adhere to the pipe it will turn white and eventualy flake off! Well.... the paint I used did and it was rted to 800 or something like that! May be good to rough up the pipe a bit as well with som really fine sand paper to help the paint adhere to it a bit better!

Rogue Cheddar and Chopped,

You are entitled to your umbrage. Just my opinion (like some other things, everyone's got one) stated rather rudely with a slight effort at humor.

No offense intended (you're entitled to your opinion too - even if it is wrong  ;) ) However I did notice that Chopped suggested painting.

i have wrapped pipes on my chopper, and they do smell when wet. not pleasantly either. it hides bad welds quite nicely :o. i would go with a high gloss, high heat paint. scuffing them first is a must.

i resubmit in another lingo:
exhaust wrap is for tweakin performance
less you want the frankinstien look
(not bobbed look, wrap wasnt around then)
b4 there were choppers there were bobbers....

i agree, exhaust wrap is more of a hot rod thing.

Or you can wrap it for "YOUR" protection, a wrap'd pipe you can bump into and not remove large amounts of cooked flesh....

I plan on ceramic coating mine once I get the new header built.

What does anyone know about the ceramic coating? Had a guy checking out my bike yesterday and he suggested that. I was debating on removing the wrap and painting my exhaust and he said if you leave the wrap on, it's best to get the ceramic treatment done. Said it's just over $100 and they coat inside and out so the heat doesn't deteriate the pipe so fast. Guess this part has nothing to do with it but it's kinda cool..it was a tech at the Harley shop that gave me that suggestion. The cool part is, 2 of them came outside and admired the savage for awhile saying how much they liked it. Then 2 more came out to see. A few asked what it was but one guy came out and immediatedly said, "is that a ls650..savage right? Awesome bike man!" With all the really nice lookin bikes in that shop, it was pretty cool to have so many of them outside admiring my savage!

i have mine painted with high heat bbq paint. i really like the color its kind of a satin but so is my bike. i think you should go with either high heat high gloss . or maybe black exhaust wrap. i dont think any flat or satin paint would look too good with a gloss bike

On second thought....  I like the rust look... go with that!

I just googled it and here is a site that does it.
http://www.classiccoatings.com/ceramic.html

Here is a site I had heard about in the past that Omar's used on his pipes.
