Title: Whats YOUR Winter Project ?
Post by mikestrikes on 11/19/08 at 18:38:01

You guys/Gals know what I'm doing "Trike'n the Savage" but what plans do you have for your Savage over the winter ?

1) Inspect Cam Chain, possible cam chain mod.
2) Chain Conversion
3) Move the heat sink to air box.
4) Build a stand to raise the wheels to waist level - I don't mind stooping down, it's the straightening back up that's painful
5) Paint the rims - replace the spokes with black SS
6) Paint tank, fenders, side covers.
7) Install LED side markers for more blinkers - some people just don't see me changing lanes.
8) Winter tuneup: Battery, oil, filters, spark plug.
9) Fine detail cleaning - like 3 rolls of paper towel cleaning.

If I could get 2 of those things completed, It'll be a good winter.

I just ordered a kerosene heater (24k BTU) and a quartz infra red heater (5k BTU) for the garage. I plan on firing up the kero heater so I can install the quartz heater - it needs to be hard wired. I'm installing the quartz heater directly above the space I have cleared to work on the Savage. If I can keep it up to 50 degrees in there, I can work all winter long. I'm hoping the quartz heater is all I need, with the kero heater for help warming up the slab. From what I read, most of the heat in a garage gets sucked up by the slab, if I can warm that up, I should be OK.

All and all, I can devote about 4 hours a week to the machine, but I work slow. The winter ends for me on March 1st, so what ever dont get done, will either get pushed off a year (ie, paint), or done durring the season (tune up).

1) I just put the head cover back on so I have the oil plug leak repaired.
2) I have the valve covers off yet. This weekend I will adjust the valves.
3) I put a new air cleaner in this week.
4) I installed a new plug tonight.
5) I got runs in the tank while painting it today so it will be resanded and   repainted. The side covers came out slick. (black 2 stage gloss without emblems)
6) I have a Raptor petcock to install once the tank is finished.
7) I am going to inspect the cam chain and tensioner (5900 miles so hopefully it is still good).
8) I had the seat upholstered but am not happy. This will also be a do-over. The bike will have to go to the shop so the upholstry guy can get the seams straight next time.
9) After the mechanicals are done I am going to warm up the engine and then change the oil.
10) I would like to take the blinkers off, but don't know what to plug the holes in the fender strut with that would look good.
11) I want to take the head pipe off and have it rechromed or ceramic coated.
12) I have a 2004 HD Deuce muffler to install.
13) I have a jet kit here that I need to install in the carb.

Riding season is over here. My garage has heat so the temp. isn't a problem for me. I need to get this finished so I can get back on my other projects that were sidelined when I bought the bike. (62 Chevy pu custom/rat, and a 68 Mustang resto-mod for my daughter to drive)

Well, IF I can get the Kawa W 650 on down here, my wife has agreed to ride the Savage.. IF Ill make it a trike. So, if Mike will guide me along, maybe Ill build a trike. The Savage tank will be okay, small as it is, because I really dont see my wife running it a lot. Maybe Ill be surprised by her & maybe we will ride further than I am expecting. Just have to see how it goes.

I rode a Honda 3 wheeled offroad machine & the solid rear axle, fat tires & all together, it didnt want to turn. How big of a deal is it on a road trike? Is there a differential involved? Im gonna have to get a real fast education.

03 Savage  currently like 5100 miles
I've only had the bike for like 800 miles.

1) Chance oil and oil filter
2) Put on Dyna Muffler
3) Re-jet
4) White spacer mod possibly
5) Detail and coat some of the metal items with a rub of WD40
6) Check/clean spark plug
7) Clean polish and wax tank
8) look into getting a cone filter
9) Check forums for other mods or upkeep I can do   ;D

Anything else you guys think I should do?

I'll be adding a fuel processor, a Kuyakyin Hyper Charger, passenger floor boards and whatever chrome accessories I can stumbe across.

If I get the chance, I'm going to swap out my stock drive for a C90 drive (a 14% taller gear ratio).  Much like the chain conversion for the Savage, it allows for smoother freeway operation....

1) I bought a kawasaki vn750 tank 3.3 gals, found sending unit and fuel gauge for it. Gonna mod it to my savage wire up the fuel gauge and paint my new tank to match stock suzi color.

2) got a verslavery on order, maybe while I'm in there put a Lancer cam in and adjust valves.

3) gonna have to figure out a new instrument cluster since I lost mine
with tank upgrade.

4) install the cargo/luggage rack I just welded up -8x11 and extends to 8x17, goes in the side rails in place of the sissy bar.

5) then we will do the normal oil change and detail clean.

That will be a lot If I get it all done

Waiting for the sun to melt the ice on the corner, and currently getting dressed to ride in this:
34° F
Flurries
Feels like 27° F
From NNW 8 mph
Not bad, but have a feeling that I'll be surrendering soon, and will be riding down to my Mom's house to work on the bike in her garage. Oil leak first and foremost. Then the front bake pads and rotor, spark plug and wire and anything else that needs changing. Have to get this tank taken care of also.

It's been a great riding season for me, with only one time stranded and that was a dead battery that only took a jump to get me home. When I bought this bike in March, being that it's an 87, I never would have thought that I would have around 5000 miles of problem free riding ahead of me. Talk about bang for the buck. As a gesture of gratitude, I may just clean every inch of her.

Well I was gonna re-paint the FireLizard from frame up, however with the cage problems I have been having It looks like I will have to put her back together without the paint job.

If time permits, finalize my Harley Air Ride Police Seat mod, and paint and install a Road King 5 gal Tank.  I'm starting a new job next week so we'll see if I have time on the weekends to get this done . Here is my mockup of the Police Seat install

Seat ! looks more like a couch to me.
Personally I find nothing wrong with the savage seat, and at my age the old a$$ is getting a bit boney, never had a problem.

Up to 100 miles I really have no issues with the stock seat either. I picked up the air ride seat at a great price and I've been working on a quick change system from stock to air ride & back.   It certainly is a big seat, but remember that it was designed for a policeman who spends 2 hrs a day eating donuts :-)

removing the savage engine and putting in a 406cc diesel engine and converting to run on waste veggie oil. To do that I need to go chain drive. As long as Im doing that Im switching to cast wheels from a gs450. Anyone interested in the diesel/wvoproject go to http://diesel-bike.com/Diesel_Bike/Suzuki.html Im essentially doing this very same thing with the savage and then taking it one step further. Luckily I don't think I'll have to cut up the frame like Crazy Jerry did.

I'm going to start my project to SuperMoto my 2007 S40.
Longer rear shocks, fork boots, hand guards, maybe raise the front fender add a small windshield.

In the process of re-doing the bondo on my tak. Taking my time this time with the sanding and I must admit, it looks better already.

Almost done! Taillight under fender conversion, repaint in flat blue, new pipe, mini turn signal lights, reupholstery.

Unfortunately, the same project started last winter: make a brand new Daisy.

1) Remove the oil leak
2) New belt
3) New throttle cable
4) New tires
5) New rear fender & taillight
6) New tank (mine tank has many dents)
7) New paint

I need too much money to invest in this project, money that currently I do not have! Without forgetting that in Italy the parts are sold only through Suzuki dealers and they cost a lot.

So i think that this project will be the next winter project!
Another summer without Daisy...  :(
