Title: I need help picking up a new rear tire
Post by Tony01 on 11/16/08 at 19:59:26

Just like the title says, I need a new rear tire and I'd like some input on the following choices :

Metzeler ME880 Cruiser Touring Rear Tire  140/80H-15 $114.99
http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/tpl/tire/product.jsp?skuId=540233&store=Main&catId=4&productId=p540233&leafCatId=&mmyId=1760

IRC GS18 OEM Replacement Rear Tire  140/80H-15 $89.99
http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/tpl/tire/product.jsp?skuId=&store=Main&catId=4&productId=p540012&leafCatId=&mmyId=1760

Dunlop D404 Cruiser Rear Tire  140/90H-15 $72.99
http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/tpl/tire/product.jsp?skuId=542538&store=Main&catId=4&productId=p542537&leafCatId=&mmyId=1760

Thanks for your help.

Tony.

I'm able to get the D404 mounted, balanced, new tube for about $100 from a local dealer.

I've worn out two of the Dunlops and liked them just fine. I changed the second one myself instead of paying someone to do it. It's wasn't all that difficult with just the tools I had lying around, nothing special in the way of tire working tools.

Seems like you might could find them a bit cheaper if you keep looking a bit more. Just factor in a new tube as well. I was daring and used my old tube on the second tire and had no trouble, but I was always thinking about it back there. Wished we had an easy way to do tubeless, but alas . . .

I'll check the Dunlop tire with the local dealers and see what kind of pricing I can get.
Did you guys have any kind of clearance problem with the tire size 140/90H-15?
Thanks for you help.

I too have worn out 2 sets of d404's.

I was thinking of going to metzler but I'm making an effort to reinvent the wheel.  I've got a gs450 alloy rim on the front... tubeless!  And I'm working on the rear.  So didn't want a long lasting tire.

I got my bike with a hair over 5K on the clock and an OEM IRC that needed replacing.  Ran a 140/90-15 D404, got about 10K out of it.  Next was a Cheng Shin for another 10K.  Am now trying a Metezler.  If I don't get 14K I'll be returning to the Dunlops.

As for sizes, according to the manufacturers, width x height:

IRC GS18 140/80-15   5.04 x 24.09 (3" rim)
Metezler   140/80-15   5.71 x 24.37 (3.5" rim)
Dunlop     140/90-15   5.85 x 24.73 (3.5" rim)
Dunlop     130/90-15   5.15 x 23.95 (3" rim)

Our rim is 2.75, so all those numbers will be a hair narrower and a hair taller.  Compared with the IRC, the dunlops are:
130/90-15   2% wider,  0.6% shorter
140/90-15  16% wider, 2.6% taller

While the 140/90 fits with few complaints, the 130/90 is actually a far better match to the 140/80 IRC.

I got a Dunlop 404 rear (140/90H-15) for $69 at the local Suzuki dealer.  Then paid $24 to mount & balance.

I was looking at some new type tires (I think it was Michelin) that has two rubber densities.  A center strip of higher density for long ride life and then softer sides for the good grip on turns.  At teh time, they didn't make them in our size.

Bridgestone has had dual compound tyres for at least 15 years. I've run two of them and they didn't offer any noticeable improvement in terms of grip or longevity.

D404 here. Had to go to different bolts for inside fender clearance since I have the saddle bag supports. Love the look (fat) and like the way it steers with fact tire still up front even in agressive 70 mph leaned over pegscrapping turns.  I do not do that much thou and i do not recommend you try this!

Minority opinion here:

Mine only gets ridden about 1300 miles a year.  It's my daily rider, but the trips are short.  And, I'm not home all that often (I'm out riding one of my big street burners).

I just bought another OEM IRC tire for the rear.  If I get a high quality tire, it will age-out before I can wear it out.

Something to consider if you are a low mileage rider.

I have the stock IRC tires on my 2001 at 2700+ miles - I don't know the datecode.  Yeah it's a little scary but I looked them all over and I don't see any cracking and the summer grip was fine.  Even so, I expect to replace them with 404s in the spring 2009 but run it around the block over the winter.  Should I be more concerned with the cold weather operation in the meantime?

My '01 (see signature) still has the original rubber on it.  Traction seems the same as ever, even in cold weather (note that all tires I'm aware of will provide less traction in cold weather).

YMMV, so be careful!
