Title: Sportster muff volumn
Post by Jack_650 on 11/11/08 at 13:07:19

I've got the standard stock Sportster take-off muffler on my 650 and I would like it to be not quite so loud. It seems I'm complaining a lot more about my neighborhood's really loud Harleys at all hours of the day and night and am starting to feel a bit hypocritical. Mine's not near as loud and I don't go roaring around at 2:00 in the morning, but I would still like to take the level down a notch or two. Anyone here know if there's a way to add baffles to those thing?

I have a second one still in the box, but don't remember if this one was softer when I first put it on or not. When Midas put it on for me they had to weld a bolt to the side of the muff for the Savage mount. So to do a switch to compare I need to do something similar and I'm not a welder.

If you want to keep the sporty maybe you could find a little chrome turnout that would fit in the end hole...Try autozone or pep boys.

Jack_650'
Is the stock take off sporty much diff than a Dyna drop off?
My Dyna is pretty deep sounding, not loud at all. I kinda miss the loud.

I really don't know much about the Harley mufflers other than the ones I got so I can't even begin to compare the different models. these are just long and thin without any bulge or taper, but not a straight pipe by any means. Our local Hawg shop had their annual fall "get rid of stuff" open house a couple years ago and I picked up the two Sportster cans for $20.00 like new. This one's been on for about two years/10k or so miles so maybe it's just time to change to the other. I really don't remember what it sounded like when first installed.

My bike has a Sportster muff on it, installed by the PO.

It's coming off this winter - I have the OEM unit that's going back on.

The Sprtster muff is just too loud.

Jerry,
What you want for your sporty muff?

if a stock sporty muff is too loud for you you need to go back to an oem muff...or fill a soda can full of steel wool and fab it on to the end of the sporty with bailing wire...... :-[

No bulge or taper doesn't like a stock harley muffler...Dyna and Sportster stock mufflers look the same and probably are , other than the mount holes.
