Title: Carry more
Post by Paladin. on 11/09/08 at 18:45:49

Occasionally I've had to take two trips to the store 'cause I couldn't carry everything in a single trip.  Solution: more carry capacity.

Found a plastic crate in the trash at work, cut a couple of pieces from the bottom so it would slip over the sissybar.  Hmmm...  a couple of u-bolts, not quite, add a steel bar, perfect.  Easy on-off, tighten the u-bolts and it is remarkably solid.

Got to test it out today, went to Top Value, picked up my tea ($1.18 for 100 tagless bags), sugar, a head of cabbage (for rolling) four large bell peppers (for stuffing) and a large cucumber (hey, it was only $.33!).  That all went into the saddlebags with room to spare.  Then across the street to Smart and Final for a box of wine, and since I was there a sixpack of corned beef hash, a family size box of Triscuits, and an 18-pack of eggs.  The eggs got to ride in a saddlebag while everything else went into the box.

I like it!!  Worked Perfect!!

I see we have the same saddle bags, cool.
I use those and a back pack ,but I'm single so I don'd need as much room as you do'

Mine are four years old, used daily, still in great shape.  Pricy, but they have held up quite well.  Carry capacity is a varible need.  Summer, when I don't need my jacket, I'll shed the saddlebags.  On my trip to OKC I had a 21" airline carry-on suitcase bracketed to the sissybar.  I like the Savage 'cause it is extremely flexible in it's capacity.  A beginner's bike, a bike for the experienced rider, a city bike, a country bike, capable of the twisties and the superslabs.

Good solution. If you mounted a boat seat cushion or something similar  to the front of the crate you'd have yourself a nice back rest too.

That is a great idea.  I use a cooler for the same thing, but your crate has a lot more room.  Perfect!

I did that once on a bike I bought from a guy many years ago for 50 bucks. It didn't have a battery so I got an old milk crate, strapped to the back and threw a car battery in there wired to the battery cables with speaker wire. (I was very young and dumb back then)

It's amazing what works when you KNOW it is not suppose to.  Hence, "It never hurts to try."

If you have a jacket with spine armor it works very well.

Was that a six pack and corned beef hash?  Or a six pack of corn, beef and hash?  I and the ATF have enquiring minds. ::)

Smart and Final, the smaller quicker warehouse food store or something like that.  Hormel Corned Beef Hash, 15 ounce can, $3.49 at Vons Supermarket.  At Smart and Final a six-pack of 15-ounce cans for $13 -- less than $2.16 a can.  The 5 liter box of Franzia White Zinfandel was only $9, $5 less than Vons.  I may not be easy, but I'm cheap!
