Title: Someone drilled holes in my muffler!
Post by hshift on 11/08/08 at 14:40:17

I guess to increase the exhaust note a P.O. of my 2000 Savage drilled eight holes around the exit hole of the muffler. I'm curious to hear what it sounds like without the holes and would like to plug the holes. I have tried JB Weld, and it held for about 25 miles, then blew out. Does anyone here have any suggestions, short of welding the holes closed? Thanks!

depending on the size of the holes, lag bolts.

I fixed my crazy-loud drilled out stocker with a harley slip-on.

I like the lag bolt idea, the only problem is that some of the holes are a little too close together, so one head will butt against another bolt head.
But you have given me an idea. I'm thinking of finding a metal ring or washer that is wide enough to fit on the muffler exhaust port, drill four holes in it, JB Weld the existing holes, and bolt the washer onto the spot where the current holes are, in effect making a 'gasket-ring-cap' thingy.

How about you cut a metal donut disc and bolt it over the end with two or three bolts...

Drilling that pattern of holes in the muffler was a modification that was promoted frequently on a predecessor of of this Board run by a guy from Germany named Bert Heise

The idea was to partially uncork the engine's potential and "improve" the exhaust note.

I think if you search on You Tube you will find a clip showing the exhaust note with the stock muffler - it was there at one point - but that was 6 or 8 years ago

You read my mind. Picked up a steel 3/4" washer from Home Depot. Gonna drill some holes in it and lag bolt it onto the muffler, with a layer of
JB Weld or equivalent between the muffler and my washer.  Maybe hi-temp gasket sealer would be better?

Just finished it up. I'll let you know if it holds up. Grand total spent, $1.86.

A little paint should do it.
