Title: cone filter
Post by il67bp on 11/05/08 at 10:41:45

will the cone filter make any kind of audible difference like it would in a car?

Title: Re: cone filter
Post by steely on 11/05/08 at 12:55:41

I hear a fast chirp with mine under acceleration.  Other than that, not really.

Yes its louder

I can hear a lot more sound when idling and also some more while under throttle, also it did make the exhaust sound deeper and louder. None are bad though.

should i go with k&n or could i just go with something like this? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150305113426&ih=005&category=35597&_trksid=p4506.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DK%252BD%26otn%3D2%26ps%3D5

I would be wary of purchasing from flightsimshop or any seller from that vicinity (Land O' Lakes, Florida).  There are a couple of well documented cases of them being less than savory sellers.  I purchased my cone filter from Lancer.  I highly recommend doing business with him.

how much from lancer?

Post by 88pagan on 11/05/08 at 20:14:53

In spite of all the bad press that seller has rec'd, I took the chance and purchased that same filter. Lancer wasn't selling them at the time or I would have gotten it from him. The sale went fine and I got the item right away but from most of the posts it appears I was one of the rare cases. Take the chance if you want or spend the extra bucks and get the k+n. The quality of this one isn't like that of the k+n, I just wanted to save some $ at the time. The only thing I don't like about the quality is the part that mounts can be detached from the cone section. Other than that it's good. Like the other posters, I notice a little chirp and the suction sound is increased when you accelerate.  But, there's nothing like that sound of a well breathing engine if you ask me.  If you can wait a few weeks I'll sell you mine for a discounted price. I'm going to buy the k+n so it matches the one I put on my breather hose.

For anyone looking at using the inexpensive cone filters that are typically found on ebay for $19-29 each, they can be purchased from Speedmoto.com for just $10 each.
The stock carb uses the 57mm ID size, and if you have a 36 or 38mm VM carb then you need a 62mm ID size.

If you do not see the specific size you want listed at the time you go to their website then email them and thell them what you need.  They are pretty good about taking care of business, do not overcharge for shipping and are trustworthy.  I have never had a problem with them.

If you want a K&N for the stock carb, you might try this one...

http://www.4filters.com/Universal-Rubber-Filter-2-14FLG-3-12B-2T-4H_p_3-2769.html
It is only $28.99 for a small cone that will fit in the small space we have on a stock bike.

The price on the cones that fit the VM carbs is double of this one, why I don't know but that's the way it is.

Post by Snowbum on 11/06/08 at 08:20:56

I know this will be a silly question, but I am guessing the cone gets much more "breathability" to the engine over the stock air filter box?

If there is notable performance with a cone, and minimal work, I might try something like this.

i bought this filter and i like it, but the only bad thing is that i had to lose the top cover for my battery and now dont have any way of putting my tool cover on. its ok cause i plan on buying a fork bag for my tools. i just gotta figure out a way to clean up the area where the tool cover went.

Savagegreasemonkey- I'll try to remember to post a pic tomorrow of my setup. I used a couple of plumbing fittings as I have on other bikes and it came out real good. Cleaned up that whole area real well, entire battery box is intact, and the filter is still removable without taking anything off the bike. Stay tuned till tomorrow...

I guess it doesn't really look as good in the pic as I thought it did. The point is, I easily moved the filter down and out so the battery box is still intact and the tool bag and cover are still the same.http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a304/88sandman/DSC02411.jpg

Post by SavageGreaseMonkey13 on 11/07/08 at 15:07:00

good idea. i guess i should look around and see if i can find something somewhere similar to make that setup. it would be nice to find a tube that was pre bent at that angle so you could just use one piece instead of two.

I just bought a cone filter from speedmoto and there customer service, shipping and prices are very good. I would recommend them to whoever is needing a cheap cone filter until they upgrade to the K&N. The filter was shipped to my house for $13 the ebay guy your referring to is NOT SO GOOD.. I have not had good dialect with them  >:( >:( >:( >:(

I just ordered on of these and I was wondering if someone can tell me what to do with the air line that goes to the top of the cylnder head cover? I have removed my old airbox so I need to know where I will put this with the cone filter installed.

Thanks!

Here is what I did with the oil breather hose.  I got the filter at Auto-Zone and it is washable stainless steel:

Gort, can you send a picture with a wider view? it's a little tough to make out the exact locations.

Here is what I did, not that there is anything wrong with any other way. Just showing another way of doing it. I can't believe how much sound comes from that little filter. It is a crappy cellphone pic.

I would like to clear up some confusion that I had when reading this post. I am intersted in doing this to my bike but when I tried to go to speedmoto.com as mentioned earlier in the post to buy a filter it was some site in another language that I could not read with links that did not work. Correct me if I am wrong lancer and savagespence but I do believe the correct site ishttp://www.speedmotoco.com/shop/. Just wanted to help out further savage guys/gals who like to tinker on their bike.

Does the existing air box/side covers have to be removed when doing this mod? I like the way the side covers look so if I could I would perfer to keep them when I add a cone filter.

im pretty sure you have to remove the airbox but you could always screw those painted panels back on and it should look the same even w/o the airbox there

Actually if I remember correctly, the left side cover mounts to a bracket that is mounted on the airbox.

That is the correct address you have...

Title: Re: cone filter
Post by Savage_Amusement on 11/17/08 at 10:50:00

You don't HAVE to take the air box out for a cone filter, but then you just have dead weight on your bike. Neither of the side panels will go back on with out the air box. At least not without some kind of bracket/mount work anyhow. If you get rid of the air box then you will need some kind of small filter like in the last few pics.

I thought about keeping the air box and sealing it off and using it to store things in.

finally got my filter. turns out the one the store ordered was an oval filter not cone and it is not street legal but i am stuck with it because there is a no return policy on special orders. anyhow i installed it and because of clearance i now have to make some brackets for the battery but here it is. ill take a better picture tomorrow if anyone is interested.

that silver line is actually in the middle of the filter. it is much taller than it looks but it had to be turned sideways to fit in between the frame

I really liked the sound when I swapped for the cone filter, but the resulting re-jet of the carb and the new found throttle response combined to drop my fuel economy into the high 40's.

If I babied it, I could get back to 53-55mpg.

The only thing I did not like about the cone filter was the accompanying whistle while under throttle.  At certain throttle positions, the air would venturi whistle as it passed the butterfly valve.  It took some getting used to.  At least until I got a louder exhaust and couldn't hear it any more.
