I need to replace my front brakes. I have an 04 savage. Can anyone recommend a good set of brake pads. Thanks

never have yet but if you can get the wheel off it cant be that hard!!

You don't need to take the wheel off. All I ever needed was a C clamp and a socket or two. There is a step by step how to in the Technical Documents section.

Of course you can change the front pads in just a few minutes - the back shoes are pretty easy if you have a motorcycle jack or some other easy way to "high center" the bike - but they should really last a very long time >20K miles anyway - but if you do change them - take it slow - spend a couple of hours - and look over everthing you have a part - check the torque on the drive pulley nut - stuff like that.

I only have 5,300 miles on my bike but I was thinking the back breaks needed to be changed because I have a squeel when I apply them. If you say they should last 20,000 miles then what are the other possible causes that would make the back breaks squeel?

The backs tend to last longer cause
1. they're hard to change.
2. they squeal like a banchee so they aren't used as often.

Cause for squealin', dirt and maybe moisture.

fixes:
1. clean (it don't stay clean for long)
2. get them hot, real hot, slowly
3. don't fix them, use as a very anoying claxton to let people know you're braking. And if you're anoying me by causing me to brake, I'm going to anoy you too. Also makes a nice wolf whistle in combo with front. ;D

BTW: EBC red's minimize rotor wear and don't squeal at all.

I got a set of metallic pads that worked well.
But, they squeaked so bad I put in the red EBCs.
My brake rotor thanked me too.
They require more effort, the Red EBCs are like the stockers but are quiet.

Last year I replaced the pads with Vesrah VD329JL sintered metal pads. As one who is allergic to anything which begins with "remove the seat", I found it remarkably easy (thanks to the great directions in the tech section here). I was always greatly irritated with brake noise, and was pleasantly surprised to find noise rare with the Vesrahs, and loved the feel of control that was far superior to the OE brakes.

Last time I took my 06 into the stealership, (since I don't have the equipment mentioned) I told them to replace the shoes with sintered metal also. I don't know which brand they used. The tech said that my shoes were about half-worn, but they ended up replacing the rear brake cable which was binding (that was the problem that caused the worn shoes indicator to indicate worn, and the sloppy noisy feel to the rear brakes).

With over 6K on the bike (2K with the pads) I remain ecstatic about the Vesrahs. The sintered metal shoes improved rear performance, though not as dramatically as the fronts. And I've found with the rears, after a few humid idle days, they do make a much sicker sound upon the first few applications, but that does go away quickly. Not at all like the squealing that the OE pads sometimes went on for days.

I'm satisfied with both, though much more with the front pads.
