Title: different risers?
Post by vandaman on 10/29/08 at 07:02:09

hey guys ive been installing some ape hanger style bars on my o6 s40 and i have been running into some trouble with the length of the cables. I ordered the cables for the buckhorn style bars and they are still a little too short. I was wondering if the buck horn style bars and the drag bars had different risers and if so where could i get them, and if they dont does anybody know of and aftermarket ones. thanks in advance for your help.

You need longer cables ? or you need better risers ?
Cables you can custom make, wiring extensions can also be made but are much harder.
I believe the buckhorn bars had these short risers and I'll trade you the shortie risers for your s40 risers ...
Let me know.
Cool.

Measure them ? how about I send you a pic tonight with a tape measure next to em. I dunno exactly what you wanna measure ... but all I can say is ... they literally dont sit but 1 inch off the top triple.
Cool.

That's beautiful ...
Could you put up a pic of the taillight. I am working on fitting one of those on mine too ... called a limp thingy tail light if I remember ... but I have to see the way you fitted T/Ses and it itself. I have also cut my fender and drilled out the spot welds keeping that thickener plate in it, all in the name of weight reduction ... but I went drag bars ... and keeping stick suspension and tank etc ...
Anyway your cables and what not flailing in front ... absolutely looks right.
Cool.

Here is a pic of taillight on the stock fender.I put it on right over the original holes.I think I had to drill 1 hole for the front bolt. The t/s I drilled holes in the sides of the light and bolted them on.

I drilled holes in the light housing, and mounted them.It didn't come that way.I think the t/s are from Drag Specialties.Probably get'em on Ebay,or an aftermarket shop.

These mini bulltes I ahve seen ... not that hard to find.
But that tail light, I thought these were in that taillight all in 1 unit.
No, maybe you had to drill the taillight and install these in them.
Cool.

I ordered my riser from d-z custom.U have the option for 4" or 1.5".Pretty neat I think. The only disadantage is u need to drill ur tripple tree plate to be able to fit in there.

Drilling the top triple is a bad idea ...
I am working on a way to get some risers made that will work as is ...
Either making risers themselves or making a adapter thing that will let you run harley risers.
When its done, I may make and sell a few ... with my bare hands I tell ya ... get the metal and beat it and twist it and bash it and eat it ... but it will be done ...  :D
Cool.

Top triple than these gigantic rubber doughnuts, the bars are not hard mounted, they are fitted into those, not in the case of the savage the rest of the triple is pretty thin, and the doughnut has a wall and its thickened around it. That prevents the chrome and steel of the bar and bolt from wearing and  destroying the cast aluminum of the triple. The triple gets good bit of bending and stressing from braking etc ... the crappy porus aluminum its made of is meant to take the load in 1 particular direction in 1 location ... somehting like that ... doughnuts sacrifice themselves with age, else it becomes a fight between the steel of the bolt and bar and theporus aluminum of the triple.
I will have to retain the original mount points for simple peace of mind.
Anyway, I am making some stuff specific to the savage, I'll put up a pic in a bit. All bikes use rubber mounts for their bars. Mostly its to kill vibration, but the additional factor is, the triples are not made well enough to take abrasion really.
Will you have a problem ? that depends on where you drilled it and how big the holes are. In general its structural and a bad idea to swiss cheese it.
Cool.
Srinath.
