Ok folks- Don't know why I started a new topic but I'm sick of that old "anyone have any good news for me". New beginnings I guess haha. So I just got back from picking up the cylinder head after it received all new valves n seals (looks great!). Going to wait till the morning to finalize reassembly, adjust the valves, decomp solenoid, etc. Anyone have any last minute advice before I actually attempt to start this thing up?? I'm hoping I will get to start it tomorrow if the day goes as planned. In a way, I'm pretty scared to start it. Maybe cause I've had it down to a thousand pcs and back. Fingers crossed, any last words are appreciated!

Alright folks here it is. Completely finished everything, bike back together, feeling confident..and..it starts right up! So I get excited and start messing with the idle and air/fuel mixture. I have a screamin eagle muffler, cone air filter, and rejetted the carb. While running it and messing with it, it gets to the point it won't run. Turns out air filter is killing it. I take it off and it starts right up. With it off there is a tiny bit of fuel spray coming from the inlet on the carb, and when I twist the throttle there is air bursts pushing OUT of the air filter side of the carb. This isn't correct, right? What the hell did I do here? It runs real good with the air filter off but that fuel and air blowing out doesn't seem one bit right. Someone please help

Next time I'll think before I post. I realized it's been many months since the engine stopped on me so I forgot some of my carb knowledge. I think it has something to do with the white spacer. I realized I've had one of Lancers washers in place of the spacer so I pulled the carb and put two more washers in. Starts up even better and feels good. Still barely a little fuel spray with the filter off though. Anybody have an opinion on this?

A '56 Goldstar 500 I had in the past would do the same thing in the low rpm range. It had a 1.5" (38mm) Amal Grand Prix racing carb that was tweaked to flow fuel like crazy, and the bike ran like a WILD ANIMAL. Anyway, when applying the throttle fuel would come back out the intake side at times...just a matter of a bit too much fuel when the engine is not spinning up enough to suck it all into the cylinder. Once the rpm gets cranked up enough then all of the fuel will be pulled inside the engine.
Check your carb settings to be sure your not running too rich in the low (pilot) and mid (needle) ranges.

Thanks Lancer. Here's how today has started, battery is all charged up again, rechecked all points on the carb. Finally got it to start but it is still running wayy too rich. At idle and a little throttle, completely blackened the spark plug and the gas is still spewing from the intake side of the carb. Possible I could need a smaller than stock pilot? I have the 52.5 stocky in and 3 of your washers in place of the white spacer. On our vacuum carbs, the needle position is determined by the space right there correct? Btw, the only thing that has changed since before the engine broke a valve is I put exhaust wrap and a cone filter on. How am I still running too rich?? Lancer, if I need a smaller pilot do you supply those or should I be able to get it somewhere local? Thanks

Oh also, anyone think I should try a hotter plug or mess with the floats? I'm almost done working on this till the sunday. Got the other motorcycles loaded up and we're heading to the desert. Poker run tomorrow starts at SlashX for anyone in the socal area that's interested.

It's alive!!! I hope it stays that way. Don't know what exactly I did but by trial and error pulling the float bowl over and over and messing with the floats..it runs. Running real nice too. When I get back from the desert I'll do some more runs and decide if the carb is tuned where I want it. Possibly need to take a washer or two back off the needle. But, as of right now it seems like it's finally back on track. Thanks to all of you that have helped..as long as the tuning goes well sunday it looks like I'll finally be riding again
