Title: My Savage going too slow?
Post by sm96 on 10/20/08 at 08:33:54

OK. This has been bothering me for a while and I havent noticed anyone else talking about it. My bike refuses to go over 55. I put in a 150 main jet and tweeked the idle and air/fuel mixture. The rest is stock for now. It seems like the bike is holding back on me once I hit around 40-45mph. It is some what embarrassing when my wifes Rebel 250 is passing me and she has to slow down for us to ride together. It is a 96 with a little over 2000 miles on it. I want to change the muffler over the winter. Anyone have and ideas on why this is happening or what I can do to help this. Thanks.

Scott

This happened to me last year.  I don't know if we have had the same problem, but I'll let you know what happened to my Savage.

The airbox collects oil from the crankcase breather.  The oil, if allowed to build up, can soak the air filter.  Eventually, the oil can gum up the carb and keep the "slider" from working.  This prevents full throttle and will keep you from getting full performance.

Check it out and see.
