Title: smaller tire sizes
Post by SavageGreaseMonkey13 on 10/19/08 at 18:43:49

Has anyone ever tried fitting a thinner rear tire on their Savage before like say a 130/90/15. Any suggestions on this setup or would it be better to stick with the stock 140/80/15? I dont care for the wide tire look at all. Im going to need some tires soon so just looking at my options. Thanks.

Wonton Destruction recommended a 130/90-15 on the rear.

IRC specs their 140/80-15 at 24.09" dia x 5.04" width on a 3" rim.
Dunlop specs their D404 130/90-15 at 23.95" dia x 5.15" width on a 3" rim.

According to the tire maunfacturers, a 140/90-15 tire should be mounted on a 3.5" rim.  We have a 2.75" rim.  According to the tire people's specifications, the 130/90-15 is a better fit for our bike.

I fit a 150/80-15 on my back rim with no issues, so, a 130 should be easy peasy.

A 90/90 tire on front instead of the stock 100/90 really smartens up the handling too!

Just had to replace OEM rear tire (IRC 140/80-15) due to a cut from a piece of metal. The replacement was a Dunlop 140/80-15. I really like the new tire, but when I was riding 2 up with my wife or daughter. I got a rub from the front attachment of the saddlebag holdout on the right side of the tire where the tread joins the sidewall. Seemed to happen only with 2 up and on bumpy road. Had stock springs which I always thought were a little soft, but decided to replace those with 11.5" Progressive 412's in the HD spring version. No more rub, but wondered if anyone else has had the same clearance problem.

The 140/80-15 tire, mounted on a 3" wide rim, according to the manufacturers is:

5.04" wide for the IRC GS18 and
5.87" wide for the Dunlop K555.  :-?

Hi Mark,

Just to set the record straight, I don't believe Dunlop offers a 140/80-15 tire.  They DO offer a 140/90-15 tire, which will be a slightly taller tire than the OEM tire is.  I don't think you would have had any rubbing problems if the tire you installed was a 140/80-15.

FWIW.....

Dunlop lists the 140-80/15 K555 tire as 24.17" tall and 5.87" wide on a 3" rim.
IRC lists the GS-18 140/80-15 tire as  24.09" tall and 5.03" wide on a 3" rim.

Tires of the same nominal size can vary considerably between manufacturers.  The Dunlop, being .84" wider than the stock IRC, could possibly run on some bikes -- especially if not centered.

I use and like the Dunlop K555 140/80 x 15 that were original fitment on Honda PC 800's. Load rating is up slightly over OE as the Honda is water cooled V-twin, shaft drive, mini wing looking ride. If I had to move away from the Savage one of these would be on the short list. Max

Oops!  My bad!  I forgot about the Pacific Coast OEM Dunlops!

Good catch, Paladin!
