I just want to make sure I completely understand the whole thing. Again, I am new to bikes so I am learning as I go.

There is a good possibility that I am going to be buying a sportster  muffler off a member and I've been reading things on re-jetting the carb to help it run better? I also think I read some where that the sportster muffler doesn't need to be re-jetted. this true? And for re-jetting: this is simply just taking the openings of the fuel "holes"(for lack of a better word) and removing them and putting a bigger hole? Its cone shaped items, right? Kinda like the cake icing attachments for different shapes? Grin

I am only changing mufflers because of the old saying, "Louder pipes save lives" and I can truly careless about the added performance although I am not complaining about this.

Now, how easy is it to re-jet? I plan on doing it myself if I need to and I like to think of myself as mechanically inclined.

Please let me know if I am understanding this concept and answer any other questions I came up with. THANKS!

Yup, you have the basic idea,...They look like little brass screws with tiny holes in the middle,...you just unscrew one and screw a different one in.  They are in the floatbowl and screw up.
If you just do the muffler, and don't do the air filter you may not have rejet.  You may want to richen the idle mix,...that's harder than rejetting, 'cause you will have to drill out the idle mix plug, to access the screw,(right-side of carb, brass plug.  You'll find more details in the tech section.

A good indicator of overall jetting is the weather...if popping/backfiring increases on humid days, or at higher elevation, that indicates rich....less popping on those days indicates lean.

To test the main, accelerate from 30 or 40 mph, in 4th or 5th gear at full throttle for several seconds, then reduce throttle by about 1/8,...if power increases for a second, you are lean on the main jet.  Go up one jet size and test again.
