How do I remove the steeing lock.
I have no key for it on this bike and its open. So I ignored it till now.

unless it suddenly becomes locked continue to ignore.

if it becomes locked or you've lost your mind and want to replace it...

take a drill (about a 1/4" or so) and bore out the cylinder (the round part that turns).

Your aim is to remove the pins and springs.

Try not to drill thru the king pin. ;D

I am hoping to get that thing out intact so I can key it. I can key the thing with the volvo blank I have that should fit with finessing, but I have to get it out intact. I think somehow that cover has that pin holding it. We get that guy out and it should let the lock come out. Just wanted to see if anyone had tried it.

If you really want the steering lock restored, ride the bike to a locksmith and let him do it. Those guys (and gals) are incredible, and won't scratch up the bike. In my old National Guard unit, one of the guys was a locksmith, and he could get into your locked locker or footlocker faster than you could with the proper key or combination!

Yea but ... $75 a pop or more. Lets see, the lock new from ron ayers is $25.50, the key I can cut will be like I dunno 1/2 hour of my time ...
I can pick a lock, that isn't the problem ...
I have actually taken stuff to old established lock smiths who struggled too. One time when I bought a bike with no keys, I took it to this guy who took 3 hours and still didn't give me a decent working key. May have been a bad lock with a bent wafer or 2 ...
I need to remove it and do it myself, how else am I gonna learn. My bet is that that pin goes in at an angle and is sitting in a retaining thingy on the lock body. Just hoping someone can confirm.

My guess is it's like a Best Lock Interchangeable Core Cylinder.

But the last pin may work the interlock. It may have to go in further and turn the other way. I'm a bit rusty on IC cylinders.

That pin does not secure the cylinder in the hole, it is only to hold the cover on. You can easily remove the pin and cover by prying them out. Then, if you can pick locks, pick the lock and you will be able to slide the cylinder out. From there rekeying should be fairly easy.

That last wafer in the lock holds it in I presume ?
The other thing I should have done is on the bike I swapped the whole FE for a KX500 one I should have tried to get it out from inside the steering neck. But I'll try from outside ... if it fails I'll try from inside the neck.
