Title: A couple questions
Post by saluteTOme on 10/04/08 at 19:11:02

Hello all. I bought a savage (2004) last sun and I got to drive it for the 1st time to today :D. I dont have tags on it yet so it was driven illegally, but I was around the block. I only did it cause in order for me to title and register it, the DMV wants me to drive it there to inspect it 1st and I get special permission when I go down there, but I also never driven a bike before so before hitting heavy roads, I took the risk and if I was to be pulled over, I am sure the cop would of been cool with it....None-the-less!

I love the bike. It feels great and it really does go when you need it too!

1st question, can you adjust the kick stand? I sort feel like it goes over too far. Can you burn the clutch? I dunno if it works the same way as a car does cause I know you can burn it a bit if you hold it down for long periods of time or womp on it. But today while driving, there was a large hill in the area and I found myself keep the clutch in going down hill so I wasn't in gear and it wouldnt pull and not having to use 5th gear. I realized I could be burning it, so I just kicked it into neutral.

Also, last thing, is there ANY specials that anyone knows about going on right now in regards to saddlebags(which btw, which ones fit the best?), highway pegs, and helmets?

Not that I know of, but the bike will lean a lot further than you would expect.  I park mine on the lawn and the stand will sink a bit but the bike hasn't fallen over yet.

ARRRGH!!!  Freewheeling.  People do so to squeeze a insignificant increase in gas mileage, but IMO this is an unsafe practice.  Some juristictions even prohibit such in the vehicle code.  I leave it in gear and allow the motor to hold my speed where I want it.  Others may have a different opinion, we're an odd bunch.

With a big enough hammer, everything fits.  Saddlebags, tailtrunks, and other ways of carrying is an ongoing discussion in many threads.  I have a pair of Leatherlyke Saddlebags -- look like leather but are hard and lockable.  And $460.  Another has hardbags that cost a third of that, new.  You can get small leather bags, or bigger ones that require doing something with the turn signals.  You can use ammo cans.  You can use huge boxes that would allow you to divy up your mother-in-law between them.

when parking turn wheel to left before you set the bike on the stand there is less chance of it falling over.

since your new i'll be nice,  you drive a car, you ride a motorcycle.

i post this pic again only to show  that the side stand will support the bike and extra weight.
i wouldn't worry so much about burning the clutch it's pretty hard to do.
here's the stand up shot

He means what he said  you RIDE a bike and DRIVE a car.
Before going  to the DMV take the riders course at your local collage,or school, after you complete the course you get a temparary licence,RIDE your bike to the DMV give them your temp and they will issue an endorcment, thats it,no more testing.
PS, the school supples the bike ,even a helmet, you will need gloves and boots, good luck and welcome.

i was not so nice when i spoke to the county reporter who keeps using the term "driving" the motorcycle, even after being corrected. i'm the sports reporter, and resident "biker".

btw  welcome,, as you hang a bit, you will see we are a diverse group of riders. any problem with the bike can be solved here. parts can be had for a song, or in my case a donation to the local animal shelter. and yes we got some real smart arse's here, and i sometimes am the leader of that pack.

I already have my temp license. I am also going the coarse route, however they are all filled up and I've been trying to get to one via "walk on" but haven't had luck. Im still trying.

ok, I got what you're saying, sorry. I'll correct myself. I've already found this forum to be helpful which is why I will be a big part of it. I also DRIVE  ;D a Mazda 3 and I am on the Mazda 3 forums ALOT. I have over 13,000 posts there and nearly half a year in logged in time.

I found a great deal on saddlebags, basically you buy the saddlebags for the going sale price and get free shipping, then you get a free set of EBC FA106 brake pads!!! I was out $105 and had the exact saddlebags I wanted(River Road synthetic leather compact slant zip- off)

Check out my post from last week

yea, I saw that. I actually already have two pairs of brakes that were sold to me with the bike. Is that a good price on the saddle bags though?

That is a great price on those bags, I wanted that model in particular, or otherwise I'd have gone with Paladin's suggestion of hard bags.
They can be found every so often for $100 with free shipping. I found a deal that was $5 more and includes a set of new brake pads. Try to see different bags on different bikes, I chose these after I saw them on a Yamaha, they will just fit without having to relocate the turn signals, and are not leather so they don't need to take great lengths to keep them looking good. And they are relatively cheap.  I would say find a local shop that carries River Road and see what they offer, if you decide you don't like the color, feel, fit, etc... then you're not out any $
