Did you check the fluid level of the battery before and after you charged it?

Your description makes me think the battery has a dead cell. Get hold of a digital voltmeter and measure the battery voltage. A fully charged 12 volt battery (the one on your Savage) should read about 12.6 volts, after sitting an hour or so off charge. That works out to 2.1 volts per cell. If it reads 12 it isn't charged. If it reads some multiple of 2.1 volts low (10.5, for example) it has one or more dead cells and is essentially trash. Turn on the ignition. The battery voltage will drop, but it shouldn't drop very much. If it drops 2 volts you have a bad cell and the battery is trash. The only cure for a dead cell is battery replacement.
